Interesting day-
Interesting day-
I had an interesting day, started out going back to my audio installer to install the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) wire so my nav knows I am moving for those first 15-20 minutes before the satellites realize I am not where I should be, kinda sucks trying to go somewhere and it thinks I am still back where I started. OK, so we got the VSS connected amidst aggresive sales for new speakers and amplifiers.
Couple people called me up to see if I was up for a short drive- hell yeah, sounds fun. We had a few rolling starts as well as light to light fun and then up the mountains for some yankin' and bankin' in the twisties- fun times. We stop for coffee and some exaggerated stories, starts to get dark so we head out. I start my car but I cant get my headlights to turn on, the side markers, small bulbs in the headlights, brakes etc all work, I can flash the high beams, but they wont stay on, fogs dont work either. I check fuses, restart etc. nada. We decide they would lead and I will follow with what little light the small bulbs put out.
then I smell something burning, smells like burning rubber from...outside, sh*t! Flat rear tire :-(
I put the donut on and call up the audio installer thinking they might have bumped or left something disconnected. It takes me about 45min to get there and we tear apart the fuse / audio area thinking its vss related. We cant find anything, put everything together and then everything works again :-| I start the car to leave and again, lights wont work (neither does the ac fan motor). I decide to experiment and find that when I turn the car over to start, the key stay in the full clockwise position, the lights and fan motor wont turn on, but if you manually turn the key clockwise a bit, the lights and ac fan work again...ok, wtf??? I also have an issue now of removing the key and when I do, the car still thinks the key is in the ignition..ummm ok. about a minute later, it decides the key is gone and will allow me to lock the car now.
I am thinking its the key barrel, but have never heard of a broken one. Anyone have any experience or idea? I'll have a conversation with the audio store GM as well.
On that note, I'm also looking for some tires that wear better than the PS2's.

I have been told by many people including dealer mechanics not to use the donut on AWD due to it's diameter.
Its your ignition switch...... I was sick of killing a rear set of PS2 every 3 months, I switched over to a Toyo T1R and they wear very well..only two sets this year..

Yes, they do fail. Mine failed on my 2001 996TT, 7 days out of warranty. Similar symptoms; key stuck in tumbler, turn key off but car is still running, etc. Fortunately, when it failed I was at CAL Speedway in Fontana, and had my trailer & tow vehicle with me. I took it to Newport Porsche and they gave me a goodwill warranty repair. I think the Audio service was just coincidental. Mine failed without warning and un-related to any unusual use or service.
I'm a big fan of Michelins, but Continentals wear a little better, with some sacrifice in grip. Priced better too!

I put the rear seats down and carefully put the rear tire on a towel, probably best to open the windows- burnt rubber smells horrible. That's twice Ive used the donut now.
T1R's huh? I might try those next, I have some Kumho ecsta SPT's on the way. About half the cost and couldnt find Nitto Invos in the right size.
Cant tell you how much time I've spent at TWS :-)
Key tumbler, what a crazy thing to fail :-(
