K24/k26 technical quandry

So as you may have read on my other lengthy thread, I was recently forced to replace both of the turbos on my TTS. I elected to buy a used set of k24/k26 turbos from YllwTurbo, who has been a real pleasure to deal with and told me that if there were any problems with the turbos he would take them back. Great guy.

As my mechanic was getting ready to install them today, he noticed that the hot-housing looked a little small. It turns out that these turbos have k16 hot-side housings machined out to accomodate k24 wheels. So they are (in my understanding) not technically k24/k26 turbos. My question is - what is the downside of running this setup? I am told that this might result in superior spool up times with some sacrifice on the top end. On the flip side, it seems crazy to put k16 anything on an Turbo S (X50) car that came with k24 turbos.

Am I wasting my time here, or is this something to be concerned about? I know that YllwTurbo will take them back if needed, but I'm not sure whether that is necessary. Can I get someone's expert opinion on this issue?

I dont see any downside, I guess that depends on who did the work, even if there was work done on them.Post pics

If it doesn't have the K24 turbine housing, get your money back.
Kevin - thank you for your thoughts. I paid $1,800 for the fake k24/26 turbos. Am I better off paying $2400 for a brand new set of K24s, or sticking with the fake k24/26s? They have your upgraded wastegates on them. Right now it is a financial issue, otherwise I would opt for your Stage 2a system - which seems to be the best option for stock fuel. What do you think? Better to go with the reliability and predictability of stock turbos for a little more money, or with the ones that I am sitting on now?

I bought a set of 24/26 from FVD. I think they still sell them as their "Racing Turbos".

Kevin, are you doing the 24/26 turbos?

So you really have basic k16/24s not k24/26s... which is basically like a stock K24...

I bought a used FVD kit that included a set of "Stage 3" FVD "race" turbos and they turned out to be regular old K24's. Sent them to Blouch for an 18G wheel and waste gates...

Well - The cold side is a k26 housing with a k26 wheel, and the hot side is a k16 housing with a k24 wheel. I don't know what that makes it.

My understanding is that a true k24/k26 turbo would be a cold side k26 housing and wheel, combined with a hot side k24 housing and wheel.

You can see that I am only just beginning to really understand this. Right now I am inclined to take Kevin's advice and go back to a stock k24 turbo.

Ur fine.... make sure your turbos are balanced and in good shape and call it a day.... maybe get the AFRS and a dyno pull to see where it really ends up.. that way you can make an educated guess before you start spending all that money... you probably just need a K24 ecu file to run them from a good tuner.
These programs ( when done right) do adjust and I have seen same maps run on different turbos just fine...

I may be wrong here, but these things aren't like pipe fittings or legos!

The 'words' of what these are must be supported by sklled fabrication. Just knowing it is a "K26/K24" is a small part- what matters is the inherent quality of the parts and the assembly.

It is just ASTONISHING that people buy these unknown parts and slap them into a $20k motor.... and wonder why dynos are screwy.

Then again, maybe turbos ARE like tinker toys and fabrication isn't a factor in how they compare.....

Wayne,

What turbos are you currently using and what programming?
