Viper BS?

A bit OT but as I may have to drag this guy I'd like to know. He has a 2004 SRT-10 Viper and says all he has is a "chip" and his car has 650HP at the wheels. He didn't seem too convincing but said he has had it dyno'd. There definately is no SC or TC under the hood so is it possible to add 100+ HP to a large displacement, NA engine? I didn't think so but am not too familiar with these cars.

I´m not an expert either, but you can add significant horsepower via porting, etc., but definately not by chip alone. The guy is BSing you, either about his HP or about his mods.

He is full of ****. An SRT-10 Viper puts low to mid 400hp to the wheels. No chip will give you 200 rwhp. I know guys with Super Charged VIPERS who are not putting 650 to the ground. Ask him what chip and a have him show you a dyno.

This guy is a ******!

Umm, You really should call him out.

The SRT10 is faster than I thought. As bone stock, It ran neck and neck to an upsolute/exhaust with a lot more room to go.

There is no "chip" that produces 650HP to the wheels. This guy could have installed the new Staging NOS kit which can easily add 150-200HP "pretty reliably" Perhaps he did that?

Ryan and I had a chance to run our cars the other evening (on a closed course, of course, lol), and I must say, the cars were pretty even. Starting in 3rd, we'd be just about even, and I'd only pull ever so slightly by the top of 4th and into 5th... gear references are for my car, not SRT-10.

That is damn impressive, considering his SRT-10's motor is still green and is bone stock, while mine had Upsolute/K&N/Techart Exhaust. Back when it had the Cargraphic exhaust, I dyno'd 455rwhp/505rwtq. So, that SRT-10 definitely is a beast straight out of the box. Beautiful American Muscle car... long hood and wide stance... definitely had great presence.

And with all that massive NA torque on demand, I can only imagine what twin turbos would add to the equation!

PS... chipping a NA car for the most part is a waste of time. The only car I've heard to respond significantly to NA reprogramming is the Maseratti... Ferrari knew that motor was destined for the F430, but detuned it in the Maseratti so that in the mean time, it wouldn't out-run the F360.

Not totally true. Proper re-mapping of an atmospheric engine can generate some good power and much better throttle response.
200 HP is totally unrealistic, but 50 to 75 is realistic. This is popular on the LS6 chevrolet engine. Even the Vipers fuel mixture can be adjusted to work better with the aggressive cam set up that comes from the factory. You will suffer from a rough idle but great power up top.

Remapping with more aggresive cams, intake, exhaust, etc definitely could potentially yield positive results. However, on 99% of NA cars, remapping the ECU while keeping everything the same is simply a waste of time.

I've known of a few camero/firebird people who've chipped their cars with just about zero gain. Car mags have backed this up as well during chip tests.

Perhaps the LS6 is one of the exceptions, though despite your findings, I am highly doubtful and have heard of no such flash/chip that will yield 50~75HP with no other changes. Not starting a flame war, but just speaking from experience.

But stephen, what about the M3. You can spend $3,499,899.09 on a Dinan chip for 3 crank HP.

As do I, and I dont take your comments as a flame at all.

I have flash/chipped my 2005 CTS-V (LS6) for a gain of 55 HP. It is tuned for the head and cam package that is going in this week. I have also had software work done on my 2004 SRT-10 with some modest power gain, more for throttle response.

I agree with you that chiped NA engines with out some substaintial head and cam work is a waist of money.

Does a "chip" even exist for the SRT10?!?

Listen to his car idle, if it doesnt sound too choppy, chances are that he just has nitrous and boltons making that kind of power.
