Coil Packs

It has been suggested to me that I should replace the coil packs when I change my spark plugs (my 2002 GT2 has almost 14K miles on her).

I was told that they should be about $50 each (6 of them =$300). I just called the stealer and he wants $83 each!

Do a really need to replace them and where can I get them cheaper?

Thanks.

14k on coil packs isn't a lot but just pull them out when you do the plugs and look to see if there's any tearing or splitting going on... They don't usually go bad per se and will show you some misfire and other codes when they do...

I would inspect first before replacing (unless you don't plan regular plug changes)... if there is no cracks around where they mount then I wouldn't bother.

^^^ I guess the problem is when you are paying someone $125 to wrench on your car (if you can call disassembly and plug swap serious 'wrenching') you don't want to have to pay them that twice if a coilpack dies on you 5k after new plugs....

Having said that, 14k seems pretty low as Alex points out.

I did my plugs at 20-something K and the coils looked great. Car hadn't been modded nor abused up to that point in time.

Next change I will consider a prophylactic coil pack replacement, but I figure it is only a few hours in the garage if they fail prior to that.

When I had my mis-fire issues back in the summer, I checked mine and 4 of them had hair line cracks. I changed them all.

According to Mr K:The 2001/2002's tend to have bad coil packs right from

01/02's have just aged more too obviously but you can buy them in pieces too... the connector vs the whole deal.... Just take a look at them and inspect for cracks and so forth.. That's always a give away
