Hopping on accelleration

One of the annoying things about my 996ttx50 is that under hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear I lose traction and have "axle hop".

Why does this happen? What can I do to fix this? How come the tires don't simply spin?

thanks

Do you have stock suspension? What tires are you running?

stock suspension

happens on stock 18" wheels / tires or 19" aftermarket (PS2s)

Keep in mind it's cold now (3 degrees celcius)

Mine did the same with stock suspension and tires. Aftr installing JIC Cross 8kg/12kg suspension and Nitto NT-01 tires the problem went away. For straight-line acceleration, the NT-01 provides good bite. Never recall doing hard acceleration 1st or 2nd gear at near freezing ambient so can't address how it would have responded under those conditions. Making 2 changes at once, I can't attest to what solved the problem. Perhaps the problem would've been corrected with tires alone.

Try turning off the traction control. When it kicks in, it feels a lot like tire hop. When turned off, my car breaks loose smoothly in 1st and 2nd.

Try warming up your tires. A lot. PS2's are like bubble gum when soft,,,,,and like rocks when cold.

Don't do burnouts, period in these cars, you will break the axle.

The 996TT is a rear engine car w/ gives advantages in terms of traction but will break the axle and hop if you insist on spining the tires out of the hole.

What is the correct "method" for launching a 996TT?

I too have an X50 and always figured it the hop as PSM kicking in. I do try to avoid the hop, but what is the best way to launch hard?

Better tires and suspension will eliminate the vast majority of wheel hop.

PS2's tend to hop on my car with PSS-9 suspension. The original PS1's did not hop as much. I think a lot has to do with the tire and I'll bet there are tires that hop less...

Most likely you are getting "hopping" because your spring pressure is too high for drag type applications. Higher spring pressures are utilized for track type applications. Softer pressures are utilized for drag type applications. In addition the front and rear pressures must be in the proper ratio for what you want to do.

I would look into what your spring pressures are first.

As far as I'm concerned wheel hop is the order of the day. These cars are the worse launch cars. Super short first gear, nasty wheel hop and a tach that shows up to 1,000 RPM low in 1st gear. The tach is too slow to keep up with the engine.

Hi,

I drive with PSM off all the time, so there was no traction control.

I wasn't launching aggressively, I would start slowly (normal clutch engagement) and then I would "floor" it and get the hop. Remember, all is stock (other than exhaust and intake so maybe I am running a bit more HP than the stock ~450 HP of the X50).

I definitely notice it more with the cooler weather. The day they drop salt on the road it's going into storage so I guess I'll have to deal with this in the spring.

Same problem here. I`m modding my car right now and I`m putting FVD PSS coiloverkit and changing tires. Will see if it helps.
