I had my car at the shop and when I got it back I can't remember if there is supposed to by a plastic belly tray covering the engine. Is there supposed to be a belly tray in the area circled in red (below)?

What's circled in green?

 

I have a new picture. The area in green in the new picture is the area of the plastic underbelly I think I'm missing. It's supposed to cover the transmission. I went to the dealership to check under some of their cars but they only had 997 Turbos and they had this area covered. Also in my picture the red arrows show some clips that are supposed to clip to something (this plastic underbelly tray I think).

Nope. But I have had mechanics forget to put everything back on and sometimes they leave their tools in my car. I'm wondering if I really even need this part for the car.

 

I say that's a bad design. The downpipes and exhaust manifolds are entirely exposed to the elements. You are getting a fair amount of water splashing against that boxer block for sure when driving in the rain.

And like a friend said, those cars are supposed to have zero-lift aerodynamics so the belley should be pretty flat, covered with some plastic.

On the Audi S4 B5 somebody measured engine temperatures with and without the belly pan and found that the engine is running hotter with the pan off.

OK I'll bite mr. 1 post...bad design seems Porsche has quite a few in the low drag range

I would bet that Porsche does wind tunnel tests with airflow over the entire car....random application of pieces of plastic sounds like poor design. Who is your friend?

You do realize the Porsche is different than an audi. Just because of one measurement from a different car does not mean you can apply this to every car. After all Porsche was cooling cars with air, so my guess again here is they know something about cooling the hotest parts of the engine.

Actually you might be ok, I looked under my car today and I'm exposed there as well. The last cover in the back is the rear cover 996 504 029 00. I had mine come loose and break off on the freeway when the shop didn't tighten it up. It also broke a piece off the center cover where they mate, so I ended up buying both new pieces to make sure I had everything tight and mated properly. Download the parts catalog in this thread, refer to p.196 #5 for the rear cover and the other ones as well...

you may want to check into the vented covers, sam who used to work over at speed gallery pointed them out to me. from what he told me I have set and from what he said are pretty rare.
