Repaint Wheels - Remove Chrome

Hi,

I would like to refinish a set of wheels that came with my used 996TT. They are 3 piece (I think Cargraphic) 19" wheels. The centers and the rim halves were all chromed. I'd like to paint the centers a semi-gloss black, and polish the rim halves (like Ray's Pastel Yellow TT).

Would there be any issues with having the chrome removed? There is a little curb rash on one rim, and I can see the copper plating underneath. Any experts out there know about removing the chrome layer, as well as the layers underneath that were required to put chrome on aluminum? Also after all layers have been removed, could the rim halves be polished to look like new (no stains from bonding the old layers of metal)?

And lastly, after polishing the rims, I'd like to put maybe a semi-gloss clear coat to make 'em look like the finish on the stock Fuchs alloys on my old 911. Has anyone done this?

Thanks.

Anything can be done, chrome needs to be removed using chemicals in order to get it all off. As far as the old fuchs wheels they are actually anodized on a portion of the lip. It's a little more than a flat clear to do it exactly the same way.

Hey Big-Jake,

Thanks. I've talked to Eli before. Is he the go-to guy here in LA? His prices seem reasonable, how is the quality of his work? Also, I was wondering why he has a "banned" status here on 6.

If the Fuchs are annodized on the lip, is it like a silver or clear annodizing? I suppose annodizing is a possibility for me too. Have you heard of anyone putting a matte clear coat though?

Thanks.

Stu,

Eli knows more about the annodized Porsche fuchs than I. I E-mailed him regarding banning he informed me that he offered out shop services (vinyl for Cayenne guys) and was banned without warning. Oh well... hope he gets un-banned one day.

But back on topic, just do searches, he can be found on varius forums regarding his quality.

Let him know BJ refered you over if you do call

I have a set of Cargraphics that I am looking to get rid of. I'm moving back to 18's. They are already like what you have described. Plus they have brand new Continental Sport 3's (235/315). Let me know if you're interested.

Please send PM with price and condition. Are there any flaws? They are matte black centers with polished rims? Were they that way from the factory, or painted here?

Thanks.

Hey BJ,
If I have Eli paint my wheels I will certainly let him know you referred me. And thanks for emailing him, I felt comfortable with him when I talked to him, but was curious about the banned thing.

Thanks.

Forgot to ask, could you post or PM some pics of the wheels?
Thanks.
