Light Weight the Turbo~~~
Light Weight the Turbo~~~
I wonder how much weight you can save on the standard TT, and still keep the original interior look.
So far there is
- Switch to GT3 Seats (80lb)
- Remove Back Seats + Remove Back Seat Belt (50lb)
- Remove Spare Tire (40lb)
- Carbon Front hood, spoiler...(30lb if carbon GT2 wing, 20lb for the hood)
- Exhaust (10lb? for europipe?)
So far: 230lb in total
Turbo weigh 3480 Originally,
After Above = 3250 lb
If engine component and etc are to be included,
- Y-pipe + carbon intake = 60lb
- clutch and flywheels = hm....40lb???
- remove the sound proof material (I think GT2's have them removed already) = 100+lb?
so total approximately 200lb
Car now = 3050 lb (1384kg)
What else can be done????? w/o altering much of the look for the car...??????

i think you are overestimating some of that weight loss because the GT2 already has most of that done to it plus no awd and it is not that light. granted the gt2 wheels are heavier but the numbers aren't adding up for me.
^^ hehehe...if I have a gt2, I won't have as much fun in modifying the car ^___^...
if I do have a gt2, I guess the only thing I can do to the car is ecu and interior...^^...
don't really want to play around with such a nice car...

the GT3 seats saves a lot of weight huh?
I think I might have to get 'em

You could definitely save a few hundred pounds with some very extensive modifications. But, why? Acceleration will not change noticeably. The car will be much less civilized and its value will be impaired if you sell it.
The only reason I would consider doing such a thing would be if you were using the car for road racing. That, I think, would make a great deal of sense if the car were a dedicated racer... as it would definitely improve lap times (other things equal). In fact, at the risk of inciting controversy, I would be willing to bet that an AWD 996TT of equal power and weight (to a GT2) would outrun a GT2 on the track. I base this premise on the performance of the AWD Audi Quattros in Trans Am during the 1980s. Their performance was simply phenomenal and the SCCA could do nothing to slow them down. Ultimately AWD cars were banned from the series.

hehe...i was thinking that....after the engine mod....640HP...
any 10HP gain after that will cost me a lot a lot more...
consider stage 5 vs stage 4GT...the price is doubled...and the HP difference is less than 100HP....
why not lightweight the car a few hundred pounds, and still get the same result performance wise....
I believe a 640HP turbo that weigh less than 3000lb will out accelerate/perform the 640HP 3500lb turbo anytime. (maybe even the 700HP turbo that weight 3500lb) ^_____^
a 500lb saving on the current turbo will be easy in my opinion, w/o the need to take out too many parts from the car. And besides, passing the 640HP barrier the longevity for the engine will be a big issue.
I don't think I'll be selling the car that easily in the future if I really do the engine mod. Might just keep it, and get the next generation turbo for daily commuting.

luting chen,
go back to rlist and find my thread "TT weight reduction possible" on this from february 16 [search watt and canyon slammer]. i considered this project before i bought another gt2. i think we got the car potentially to 2800 pounds- just imagine with a simple Ruf 550 package!!! here is the search or the thread, i cant tell:
http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...canyon+slammer
i figured a lightweight TT becomes ultimate canyon slammer. problem for me is since i never keep cars, is removing all that stuff destroys the resale enough that even i couldn't deal with it.
after much thought i just bought another gt2 which certainly is the best off the shelf canyon slammer.
i'm still thinking about a mod'd lightweight TT if i could create a canyon slammer that also could be used for open road racing, it would be much cheaper than buying a ruf turboR...

sheeeeet... Luting just have wilber build you a turbo system and you won't care about weight too much. With the custom exhaust that I have, I saved at least 30-35 lbs. on the mufflers alone. Yeah, it's loud, but it's cool.
I also have a GT3-RS hood (as you know), no back seats, lightweight wheels, I probably saved about 200 lbs. or so from stock.
More importantly, my power to weight ratio is great! Tune your suspension right and you will have an awesome canyon bomber.
