Any guide available to do this, time for a Garmin or a Tom Tom and can get rid of some weight too with the OEM item out ?

I don't know but if you succeed and get ALL the equipment removed hang on to it. I may want to purchase in the future.

you may get lost, the 2001 TT sat navs do not have updated disc maps beyond 2003

PeterK is infamous around these parts
On a positive note, they say that it is easier to install an aftermarket sat-nav on the pre-fiber optic car. I think you can get a double din sat-nav system for under $400 nowadays. I generally permanently installed systems a bit more precise than portable PDA-based units, probably because a lot of them use accelerometers for fine tuning their calculations. I've tested a garmin nuvi versus MB-e class OEM sat nav and the OEM unit came a clear winner.

How did you test them? Was it based on accuracy of current location, completeness of maps, best routes...etc?

Richard,

On my old 996TT, the CD based NAV was basically useless. However, that big flat screen was a perfect placed to suction cup my Garmin Nuvi.

It never damaged the screen, either.

I've tested it by taking it on a long road trip. In busy urban enviroment, where GPS system was harder to catch, the MB system continued to be very precise and timelly. The garmin unit would often lag behind in naming streets and giving the directions.

I need my sat nav screen still for the phone and radio, will be just taking out the disc player, plan to stick the portable Garmin to the windshield/windscreen on an as needed basis

ok took all of 15 minutes used a very fine screwdriver in the holes to release the clips, pops out very simply, does not effect the operation of rest of the PCM console with no Sat Nat, I guess that's another 2.5lbs less !!
