"Porsche 911 Story" by Paul Frere - 7th Edition
Very comprehensive with heavy technical overtones covering the entire development history of the 911. Available online from Barnes & Nobel or Amazon. ISBN 1 85960 839 6

If you want a very in-depth book try "Excellence was Expected" by Karl Ludvigsen. A second edition was released in the last 2 years.

I have that. It is more like a three volume encyclopedia. I can't imagine anything more comprehensive.
