Help on a speeding ticket!
Help on a speeding ticket!
HI this is david's friend on the way to dallas he got a speeding ticket right before the border line to arizona. There was a mustang toying w/ him on the road. David said he did not want any part of it! So the officer said that he over took the mustang which was bull! So then when the CHP issued him the ticket which said 90 in a 70 zone, Dave asked him if he could see the speed on the radar gun. The officer replied no, but he asked where he heard that from. David replied "from people." (from 6speedonline and a friend that is a cop) So he replied w/ " Who ever the people where they where wrong." So then david said OK! I know dave and he has nothing against cops but he told me this guy was the biggest TOOL he ever met! the officer was shocked when dave asked about the radar speed!
So what I am asking for you to help me on is, once we ask the CHP if we can see the radar speed on the gun they need to show it to us, Is that correct or not? Is it also true besides the radar speed he also has to see the car visually speeding .i.e passing alot of cars.
.thanks. David will repond asap.

Police DO NOT have to show you their radar readout.
The are a few reasons for this.
1.) It's dangerous. The risk of either of you getting hit by a vehicle while walking back to the squad car then back to your car is high.
2.) It wastes the cops time when they could be back out protecting the public or eating a donut (not necessarily in that order). Think about it, what would the officer gain by inviting a ticked off speeder into their cruiser to argue? It's easier for them to just say no and be done with it.
3.) By asking to see it in the first place, you're basically calling them a liar. They then enjoy telling you they don't have to show it to you.
4.) Your speed might not be there in the first place because it has already cleared or registered the speed of another motorist in the meantime. Or, they didn't use radar and "paced" you. This means they matched your speed and thus know your speed.
Hope this helps,

Correct. This also holds true in the state of Georgia.
For most states, the idea that a cop has to show you the readout is a "Urban Legend". They do, however, have to calibrate the device upon request (in GA that is). Different states have different laws, but this is the general consensus.

If you're David's friend, tell him not to speed. He should've flown to Dallas. He's going to his uncle's funeral for Christ sake, not a Porsche meet. Even 10mph over is too much. Just turn the cruise control on.

Its like you never broke the speed limit before and got a speeding ticket. Have some respect to what happened. And its none of your business whether he goes to a porsche meet or to his uncle's funeral.

There is nothing disrespectful about what I said.
We can take it offline if you disagree.
Hey everyone is me again, I made it save and sound.
The Story:
While on my way out of Cali. a red Mustang is hanging around my blind spot for about 25 miles and I am trying to murge to exit the freeway by the boarder of AZ and CA, but the *** in the Mustang won't let me. So I speed up to get over and he does the same and blocks me from proceding, so then I slow down. He does the same and blocks me again. He was doing that crap for about 10 miles before the boarder and I am thinking WTF either go or stop. So of corse I have to exit not only to get away from this tool but to pick up my brother in Yuma and that's when the officer passes us on the opposite side of the freeway and makes a u-turn. So I am doing the speed limit (70) and the tool in the Mustang is still doing like (80-85) and the cop gets behind me and I already knew that he was going to get me and he does.
Just because I was in the #1 lane he thinks that I am trying to over take the Mustang, which is untrue but he was stuck on that conclusion. The reason that I asked to see his radar is CHP uses the Stalker DSR 2X which can track upto 4 targets, and I could see the Mustang's speed which is faster than mine, so as I say that, he crosses out the orginial speed of 101 which is absolutly not true and writes in 90 on the ticket.
So I'll be fighting this one and will respond more when I relax a little from the drive.

And Collin and Jamy, just relax. There is nothing to argue about, I didn't take anything personal, and am glad that he is looking out for my well being.
David, glad you made it safe and sound. I knew you wouldn't take my remark the wrong way and that's why I made it.
My question is still why did you decide to make the long journey by land? Is Dallas your home base?

We needed an extra car when we were here, and I like driving through AZ, NM, and TX. But flights were dirt, and when I say dirt I mean dirt cheap.
