stereo upgrade

I have the factory bose system in my car, which is not very good. Would it be worth while to upgrade just the stereo or would i need to upgrade the entire system ( stereo, speakers, amplifier, etc) to make a significant difference?

How much are you willing to spend? Be careful cuase I believe you have the fiber optic cable in your's since it's an 03.

I have been looking at doing an upgrade recently too. Talked to 2 places nearby recommended by Porsche guys and they both strongly recommend some front door speakers, an amp, rear speakers, and a new receiver. They can do less or without the amp, but both places said you would be not be very happy. Of course this is all pretty subjective.

I agree...I've got an '02 with the factory Bose system. I recently upgraded the head unit to a Kenwood DNX8120. The sound is night-and-day better than the Becker head unit--but there is still a lot of room for improvement (of course, when modding, there is ALWAYS room for improvement ). I will probably upgrade the door speakers next... But if you're looking for improved sound, a new head unit will definitely start you in the right direction

from the research i just did on this, it appears that i would have to replace the amp along with the head unit, because my car is 2003 or newer. Is my understanding correct?

Yes, that's correct. Since your car has the MOST fiberoptic system, you'd have to replace the amp, speakers and run copper wire through the car...

The modules that use MOST are PCM2,amplifier and CD changer...For speakers and sub there are already copper cable through the car since they are all analogue sound devices...and not digital speakers...MOST technology can only transmit data at low level and not any power output capable of driving a subwoofer...So change pcm2,amp and cd changer, pass some pairs of RCA cables from dash to new amp and you re done...

I will be able to tell you next week as I am just having a double din DVD head unit put in on Tues/Wed. Gonna just do that and see how I like it. I don't think the factory system is very good, but I don't hate it I guess. I still like hearing my exhaust most of the time.

I'm going to mimic this setup attached so I have that cubby hole for the Greddy EBC later when I add that.
