GT2 on eBay for 77k

Saw this GT2 on eBay, item 270330617548. But it now 77k.

2001 Porsche GT2 577 HP Shark Werks WP0ZZZ9971S695148 Mileage:20,718 miles

Emailed a few questions and the guy was very defensive about it. I think
it is gray market as it was imported before the GT2 was available here
according to the ad, also listed a "577 hp" kit from Shark Werks and I do
not see a "577 hp" kit on their website. He would not tell me what had
been done to the car. If it is legit then it seems to be a good deal.
Anybody know anything about this car?

Just the VIN tells you it's grey market...WPOZZZ??? That's a Euro car. Call Alex at Sharkwerks and ask him...if the car was a SharkWerks car, he'll remember it....James does most of the work and generally remembers every car.

ANYONE who gets hinky over a few relevant questions should raise the radar image....

I just went and looked at that car...that has a "celebrity tax" on it...it was supposedly Gretsky's car....which means it is a special asset car. That means that a celebrity's A$$-set in it at one time. Since it's at a dealership, they're probably tired of tire kickers calling or wanting to drive it, so if you don't sound like your're a sincerely interested and viable customer, they'll blow you off. They will also tend to be defensive about the celebrity tax. I see Sloane has had Andre' Aggasi's slantnose for over a year...it's got a major celebrity tax on it and it just sits....I'd never pay a celebrity tax...but then again, I'm not a collector.

Hmm I remember that car from a few years ago... all we did to it was a flash, DV's, plugs and I think an exhaust (I'll have to look that up). It was Wayne Gretzky's car originally you're right and I remember because it was also an 01 and a European GT2 imported in.

Thanks guys. Alex, I thought it was weird when they mentioned a "577" kit, didn't
even see any intake work from the pics but it could have the rest, you think the guy
would have just answered my questions.
My experience with anything "celebrity" owned is that it was treated like a rental, to
them a GT2 is like a Kia. Still could be a good deal, just don't know what the gray
factor on price would be, it supposedly has all EPA and DOT paper work though.

Hey RD, no worries and yes I'm not sure what kit that is either:P I know it was well taken care of as of 3 years ago when we did the work but that's a long time ago and possibly a few owners later? I know it was road-legal then so the hard part was done

A bit of history on this GT2

This car was sold by Fantasy Junction in Emeryville, CA 2-4 years ago. You can read a lot of details [and many images] about it on their site under Cars Sold. BTW FJ is and interesting place with lots of unique cars. They currently have a Series 2 GT3 for sale but hold your breath on the price.

I gave it a thought back then but decided that -Gray Market always affects value when you eventually resell and PO wasn't worth paying anything for. For those of you who might pop something else relative to a famous PO, there are very few cars that hold additional value for long, so paying extra is rarely worthwhile. Maybe James Dean, Steve McQ, or a famous race driver but I haven't seen much else retain value.

Interesting car tho. I seem to remember it was very well optioned.

Nice to see you on here John!
Did you ever put the 9FF exhaust on your GT2?

Cheers from the cold north,

Hi Marty!!! [sorry-no intention to hijack thread]

Marty-

I have no excuse. It is cold but pretty dry here... errr, old age? that always works.

I don't think I have put over 100 miles on the poor thing since I got the exhaust!

The system is still sitting right behind my GT2. I have reduced myself to removing the cover so I can feast my eyes on it every time I am in the garage. The dust is worth it... but I know it is silly to not be driving it. I have been working on my old 930 which sits next to it. Amazingly similar in performance but not in looks or feel. My wife drools over the GT2... as well as most women? I didn't quite expect this reaction.

With the housing market I have wondered about another home.. and that would mean selling the GT2. It may have lost value since I bought it but nothing compared to what has happened to the equity in my home! In fact, the GT2 looks like pretty much the best thing I could have done with that money... hahahahahahaha

Stay warm and some day I gotta get this installed... and get your tool back.
Best
JR

Not sure if anyone knows this but unless Porsche handed over some of the EPA and DOT tests including crash testing ratings to the RI who brought the car in, it is almost impossible to bring in 1 model of car. That RI would have to bring in many 996 2001 GT2's to make it feasible. Otherwise the tests are very expensive to run.

Most car makes including Porsche won't hand over the bumper ratings to a regular RI or we would be flooded with Euro cars out the butt. This makes me wonder either what kind of length's he paid $100K maybe or someone took a "shortcut" to get this approved. Just be careful.
