Help with Ticket from our Canadian Friends

I was on my way back from Montreal this past weekend (short getaway, Fri-Sun) and was pulled over by a Canadian police officer right before the Canada/US border. He said that he saw my Valentine 1... I was not speeding. He proceeded to confiscate my radar detector and give me a ticket for $611 Canadian dollars. Questions that you may be able to answer:

1. I did not know it was illegal to have radar detector in Quebec and did not see any signs indicating this was the case
2. I guess a cop can pull you over for anything, but is this typical?
3. Do they give you back the radar if I pay the fine?
4. Can I contest this? I asked the officer for a court date and he said there is no such thing there.

If they keep the detector and I pay the fine, I am in the hole for $1K. I want to know what my options are. Thanks in advance.

Required 996TT content: I am pretty sure he pulled my sorry *** over because of the car. I was in the right lane with cars passing me on the left who were obviously speeding.

sadly.....no they will not give you your radar detector back.

I live here and had one taken several years ago.

Just like where you live the officers dont need a "real" reason to pull you over.

Im not sure about the border in Quebec but here in ontario the Niagara Falls border has a large sign that reads "radar detectors are illegal in Canada"......

And Yes you can go to court over moving violations.

Good Luck!

You poor bastards living in and those choosing to visit our highly over Governed and decidedly socialistic eastern provinces... I feel sorry for you.

Move to / visit Alberta - the land of the free - and leave the land of Big Government to those who have no choice but to be there. We have the Rockie Mountains, the lowest taxes in the country, pro-guns, pro-radar detectors, pro-profits (which is a dirty word in the eastern block) and have no provincial debt.

According to the http://www.amendes.qc.ca website:
"You wish to recover goods which were seized upon the issuing of a statement of offence. If an automobile or radar detector has been seized following the issuing of your statement of offence regarding the Highway Safety Code, please contact the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) at 1 800 361-7620 (toll free) or (418) 643-7620.
The SAAQ will inform you of how to recover your goods, once the fines and additional fees related to the offence have been paid.

Is this not true?

Give it a shot. As Im not from quebec (thank goodness) Im not sure. Its a 1-800 number so give it a call!

It says that you have to pay the fine to get back your goods?? So you may have to caugh up the 600 to get a 400$ item back....no sure how smart that is.

Does your state link its insurance to Canadian tickets?

Why pay?

Just buy another V1. It's cheaper that way.

I have been trying to find out if not paying will affect me (whether DMV, insurance or otherwise). If it does not affect me, no I will not pay it, but if it does... btw, the fine is in Canadian dollars so buying a new V1 would probably cost me the same amount.

Only problem with that idea is that if you travel up here to Canada often and get pinched again......not a good place to be.

I know.......thought the same thing years ago with a ticket in the states......didnt go over well at the boarder a few years later.

In Ontario the Ontario Provincial Police are equipped with radar detector DETECTORS which pick up on the frequency pollution emitted from your unit of choice. Some detector manufacturers are worse than others but what pisses me is the fact that a detection device is basically an antenna designed to receive only. How is it that an "antenna" can transmit weak signals but not weak enough to remain undetectable by this new technology imported from Australia?

I have and will continue to lose detectors so long as we live in a country with ridiculous speed limits and no Autobahn as an alternative. My count to date is two Beltronics, two Escorts and one Valentine.

Hey Zippy, you may have your detectors, I know because mine are all imported from my buddy in Grande Prairie, Alberta but at least we don't have photo-radar!!!!

I've had a radar detector for 8 years in Ontario and have yet to be busted for it *knock on wood*. The new radar detector detector technology you are referring to is called "Spectre". Because of that, I always turn off my Radar Detector when I see a police officer around. If you lost your V1, it must've been "Spectre" that caught you. Would you mind telling me where you got caught with the V1 and how much the ticket was? I could use the info so I can be extra safe in the aforementioned area!

Thanks,
KJ

Re: Help with Ticket from our Canadian Friends

I want to know what they do with all those confiscated detectors. Do they show up on Ebay? I want a V1 for less.
