Looking at a 996 turbo, help please...
Hi folks. New to the board here. I'm trading up from my sl500 for a daily driver. I’m looking at a 03 911 turbo, gray/saddle, tiptronic, 29k miles.
Assume everything checks out after ppi, what would be the fair price for this car?
Carfax shows no accident. There were 8 service records, which concerns me a bit for probably no sound reason. Is it normal for the 996 turbo to be service for every 5k miles or so?
Carfax shows 2 owners both registered as lease vehicle, would this have any effect on the car’s value?
I'd like to replace the stock wheels with 997 turbo wheels. Can this be done? What's the cost like? I found some companies online who sell them. How do I know if they are OEM wheels?
Here are 2 links to the wheel sellers:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/18-PO...Q5fAccessories
http://www.raderwerks.com/wheels_det...&id=157&page=1
(Also, were there significant changes on quality/performance improvements in the 996 line-up? If so, which year? I’ve seen some suggest to buy only 02 and newer.)
Thanks a lot, guys!!

Last question first..no those are not oem wheels...turbo "style" is the tip off also wrong width and a "too good to be true" price. Best bet for wheels is (on this or like forum) find wheels someone replaced with aftermarket...watch the for sale areas. A fair price is one you are willing to pay...but too many variables to really tell you, how does it show? overall condition of interior and paint? I think the tip will work against the resale value. Tires? Interior trim? Nav? Any mods done? Guess? $45 to $60K
Thanks! Would there be problems replacing with 997's 19' wheels since the stock wheels are 18'. Have you seen it done before?
The car is not local. Having only seen the photos, the car looks pretty clean. Has carbon fiber interior trim. It looks like no nav or any mods. Tires look quite worn. My guess is I'll have to put new ones in place right away. I'd give the car a 8.5 out of 10 overall.

Lots of people run 19 wheels on the 996TT...but I don't know if the offsets are correct with the 997TT wheels...you may need spacers?? Do a search of the site, I think this has been asked before. Get a PPI...see if it is possible to look before you buy...refundable down payment, rest at close, go pick it up and drive it home (fun)...pictures can hide a lot.

If you're planning on using it as a daily, I'll warn you the carbon trim doesn't hold up well, same goes for any of the wood trim. Some of it is pretty costly to replace. Highly recommend a ppi by a dealer.
Good luck.
Good luck.
I never bought pre-owned before, and I have no experience with Porsche. I understand that the PPI will tell a lot about the car's condition. But aren't there things that simply won't show on paper, such as how the car really runs which is more a overall feeling than stats?

You have some control (as the paying customer) as to what the PPI should and should not include. Datalogging the ECU is a very good way to see how the car was driven, but actually driving the car will tell you that the shocks are whipped or the handling is not right. Let the inspecting garage know what your concerns are and have him check and drive accordingly.

I recommend a CPO inspection checklist plus a DME data dump for codes and over-revs.... for higher mileage cars, or modded/over-reved I would consider a leakdown....

As others have stated, PPI won't tell you everything and much of it is subjective and documented by the shop performing the PPI.
I've had multiple PPIs performed while looking for my Turbo - NONE of them were thorough! In the end, the car that ended up looking the perfect on paper and from what the shop stated, was somewhat disappointing in person - again, perfection or acceptable condition is subjective.
My suggestion (not advice) is to have a reputable shop (and not the dealer that cared for the car) perform an inspection - paying close attention to areas that you have concern.
The data dump will provide good information - and there should be no over-revs with this car being a tip.
Good luck,
Rich
