DIY: Make your own carbon fiber peices...sort of :)

As I finished up my exterior mods, I wanted to work on my interior a little but without spending lots of money. I was browsing through some websites and found this neat little fabric. It’s extremely flexible and can conform to a slew of shapes.

Anyway, I bought about 3 yards ($40 or so) and started messing around. Here are some pics

A couple things to note on this DIY:

  • These are the tools you’ll need
    • 3m spray-on adhesive
    • Very sharp razor blade
    • Scissors
    • Patience
  • Super glue the corners and don’t be stingy on the glue. It won’t seep through the fabric but the last thing you want is the corners peeling up
  • Leave at least 1” more on the fabric over the piece you are covering.
  • Stretch the material as you apply it. Don’t just fold it over and smooth it out…pull on it.

The first piece I did was my armrest and I didn’t follow either of those first two and it turned out ok.

Here are some pics:

You can see very slight bumps…that’s what happens when you don’t pull/stretch it

And this is what happens when you don’t leave enough fabric on the sides L

I worked the these pieces next

This time I was smarter and left about an inch on each side

As you round the corners, PULL and the fabric will conform to the shapes (obviously, sharp corners, you can’t do that and you’ll have to manipulate a little.

After pulling, you will get these really small creases but you won’t see them when it’s back on the car.

Also, when you super glue the corners, put glue not only on the corners but also about ½” more so the fabric will be glued way into the back.

Finished

Looks like the "Carbon Leather" trim that's available on the new M3. A lot of guys have complained that it can scuff and scratch pretty easily. Any problems with the material you bought?

Well, I just bought it and just did it today... a lot of bmw guys have had it and it seemed to have held up.

Thomas,

Actually, I think that's the one that BMW guys complain about. I bought it from eurodyne and this is the thread that started it all

Wow, that guy did a great job. Man, I really need this economy to pick up. Less work, means i'm putting more time into my car. Thus more money into it....

I'm really considering ordering your steering wheel from fvd...

Thomas,

The steering wheel is sweet and very heavy. I can't wait to put it on. I just have to get my car running right and then everything goes on...including my new wing and my new sides from Precision.

Unfortunately for me...even in the down economy, I'm working more b/c we are cutting costs (aka overhead = people) and more work is getting pushed on me ... I guess I shouldn't complain... at least I still have a job.

What's it like working with the material, can it follow complex curves, how flexible is it. Would you be possible to wrap the center console with it for example? It looks really cool I want to try to wrap some of the pieces in my car
