Brakes

I believe my OEM brakes give me sufficient braking power but I need a better setup for the track on pads. I am looking at Pagids with Rear: RS 4-4 ORANGE Front: RS 14 BLACK - has anyone run a similar setup or have comments on it? I will be using them on the street, too so any input would be appreciated.

I'm in the same situation. I was thinking of going to Pagid RS 19 yellows.

My tech advisor pointed me to this site:

http://www.pagidusa.com/characteri.html

Says the RS-19s are an upgrade from the RS-14s

Maybe RS 4-4 in the front and RS-19s in the rear?

I used to use to pagid orange's... You will sound like a bus though... The other thing is that the harder the compound the worse it is on your stock rotors. They might actually start cracking and warping... Mine did.

Good luck ... you're starting down a difficult road. I believe you will end up upgrading your brakes. You can't get enough cooling if you push your car really hard. Also, your idea of using a higher coefficient of friction pad in the rear to improve the brake bias is sound, but you will squeak like a mother. I will have a track report on my stoptech brakes in a week.

Tim - I'll wait until I get your track report. My next track day is Oct 12 so I have a little time.

Do you happen to do NASA events?

Ken,
I have been told NOT do different colors front/rear. I guess if you do it won't be even braking and therefor unstable....correct me if I am wrong...

Ken, I'm going to be trying 4-4 front and rs 14 rear this coming weekend.

From what I am told. 4-4 all around does not use the rears enough to brake. The combination utilizes the rear brake more.

Evan, if you dont track, this should not matter besides driving on the street on race pads other than going to and from the track is not a good idea.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "really hard".....but a couple yrs back I just went to steel lines & before the weekend I throw on P-Orange (takes 20 minutes) and flush / fill w/Super Blue, and that's it in the brake dept.
I do go through rotors, but honestly think the brakes are pretty awesome the way they are. I'm rarely on the track more than 45 min at a time, but pretty sure I'm at max temp (for me) well before that.

I guess I'd ask, if there if there is anyone out there using dif rotors?......that might be an upgrade (with a tad more life).

Using diffrent rotors is also an idea, especially if slotted. Honestly speaking, my stock Pirellis gave up way before the brakes were affected by fade. That's why I might do Michlien cups and pads for now and try to delay the enevitable major brake and suspension upgrade.

Hum....the way I am thinking about it, if you were to do rear brake pads that were "better" would it be like pulling up the ebrake when you stomp on the brakes?? You will have more stopping power in the rear than front no?? In this situation he is talking about Blacks on the front which while I don't think would be as big a deal, still doesn't seem like it would work right ot me???
I don't know much about brakes, I am trying to learn here

Evan:

Porsche (like almost all manufacturers) over biases the brakes to the front of the car so that there is no risk of the back end coming around under heavy braking. This significantly reduces your overall braking capability because the rears aren’t doing all they could. You can do a few things to correct this. 1. install an adjustable proportioning valve (best choice, a little difficult). 2. Change brake piston area to effectively change the bias (what I have done). 3. use different pads ie. higher coefficient of friction in the back to improve the bite back there. You have to be careful here that you don’t go to far so make sure you test the car where it’s safe.

So wouldn't putting black in the front and orange in the rear make this worse??

Oh God ... thanks Evan. Ken, you're doing it wrong. Try the balcks at the rear and blacks or oranges up front if you are really pushing the car (squealing the tires consistently is a simple guide). I was going to do black front gray rear before I upgraded the brakes. Now I'm black black.
