I had a doctor get a little loose with the knife during neck surgery, and he nicked the spinal chord causing me to represent very much like a stroke victim. (One side impaired) It was/is my right side, so I have to use a "left foot gas pedal" which rules out me running a clutch again. Anyway, I wanted to point out two things. First, don't listen to what any doctor tells you, either way, about your recovery. The nervous system is a complete mystery to them, and anything they put forward is a guess. I was literally in a power-chair for two months of inpatient rehab, a "regular" wheelchair for about 8 months after, then to all sorts of crutches and canes, and now all I have is an ankle brace and I'm still getting better. (8 years out) The bottom line is that the only definite is that you will get the best results possible if you work your tail off in physical therapy.
As far as your license goes, I know for a fact that in New York State your license is good until it expires. Period. The therapists in my physical therapy place tried to get this one guy's license pulled and the DMV wouldn't do it. Even if you use adaptive equipment like hand controls, I believe it is "recommended" that you retake your road test. This is something that the AARP has probably lobbied for to protect old people who have no business driving, ... driving. Good luck, and keep up with the PT. It can do nothing but good.

Wishing you a speedy recovery!
It is standard procedures for doctors to report someone to the DMV after a stroke. Once you are cleared by your doc, you have to go down to the DMV and be retsted before getting your license back. There are drivers training programs geared towards stroke survivors. Remember, stroke recovery is like an investment, you get back what you put into it.
Godspeed!
