Need A 2nd Key - Going To Need To Sell My Kidney

So, I bought my 996TT recently, (few months back) and it only has 1 key. I'd like to have a 2nd around as a spare. I called my local dealer this morning (Ira Porsche - Danvers, Ma.) and they told me that they needed to order the key from Germany, have it laser cut there, shipped here, and then programmed with the car. Total cost $450. You've got to be kidding me here....Thoughts please.

That sounds high. Should be around $300. Make sure when they program it to your car that the memory seats work if you have them. It seem they have to go to a specail place in the software to change this to make it work.

Did you tell them that you already have one key? I figure they charge the outrageous price because they think you can't start the car.

Try another dealer and see; some dealers offer 10% discount for PCA members.

Look around like others have suggested...or call the person you bought the car from.

I always make sure they have a 2nd key (or figure some sort of credit if they don't) as these prices are always high...

Enough time goes by, and you'll learn to live with 1 key though lol...I picked up a e46 m3 some time ago...1 key, and never bothered to pick up another after hearing those ridic prices...

Leave the key in the ignition - that way you'll never need the second key. BTW, where do you park your car?

It at least helps keep down key copying I suppose. Highway robbery for sure....

Sunset might do it cheaper....but I suspect that this is one of those things you need to "be there in person" for....and we all can appreciate that.

Good luck.

....just don't get hammered and hide BOTH KEYS b/c your girlfriend is driving your car when you are out of town......

One year later....... and I still don't have any idea where the keys are......

True story. $700 lesson.

I would be uncomfortable with one key, if you lose it your screwed...But you can buy a key, not program it and have a spare that works mechanically. Check this link for key blanks and keyheads $50 to $100...so all you need is the key blank cut, how much could that be?

You fax them a copy of the registration they source the key based on VIN. My local independent charged me 1/2 hr for programming (dealer wanted 1 hr for a 15 min job).
Soup to nuts total was <$300; would have been cheaper if I went for the valet key (no remote head).

Look out for different year models; the earlier remotes won't work with 2003+ cars. You need the serial number ("key code") paperwork that comes with the key to program it.

Geez, I've been putting this off as I only have one key also. Shouldn't be surprised with Porsche though.

Ha ha , I only have one and its the valet key. I usually never lock the car and keep it with the top down. It kind of sucks but I figured i can live like that as I dont plan to keep the car more than 1 year

I think the "Germany" story is BS. When I bought my GT2 it only came with one key. I made a stink with the seller and we agreed that he would buy a new key. He went to the Porsche dealer and bought a new blank key that still needed programming. I took it to my dealer when I got the car home and they charged me $148.00 to program the key. I sent the bill to the seller. I don't know what the seller paid for the key, but I would imagine the whole thing with programming was less than $300.00.
