In HK, a Tip for sure; too much stop and go traffics.

For driving in traffic, obviously a tip...BUT, I would never buy a 996TT for driving in traffic in the first place so the point is moot (if I am facing traffic I will take the SMG M3 of the Tippy CTT). A tip is antithetical to the purpose of a sports car IMO although I understand that some people have physical limitations that neccesitate them.

For constant traffic driving, Tip for sure.

But for free driving, nothing compares to physically downshifting from 4th to 3rd, left foot on the clutch and right hand on the shifter--that momentary feeling of pure momentum carrying you forward as the gears disengage, and the growl of the engine when they re-engage and the turbos spool as you rocket past all those inferior cars on the highway Pure Pcar heaven

lots of ppl drive tips in HK. in fact, you'll find it's the majority.

996TT with eGas is nice in that it'll hold you on the uphill from rolling backwards. I have never had a problem driving stick in traffic unless I am really tired or if it's stop and go on hilly roads. If you can find a stick, I'd go for it.

are the Tiptronics problematic at all?

I've read of the 2nd gear popping out thing with the 6spds. Just wondering if the tip may be a decent choice if you're buying a car without a warranty.

they make egas since production of the 996tt for a manual car? Cannot decide on a tip or manual. there will be traffic but it will not be my everyday car. more for fun on the weekends plus I love the heal toe down shift sound which the tip wont produce. a smg will do that ofcourse but the tip is no SMG gearbox.

You already answered your own question... go with the 6speed.

I think in HK the dealer only sell manual trans for GT3, GT2 and GT3RS, the rest are all tip only?

The tiptronic comes with its own host of problems, such as leak, electronic gremlins, etc. These problems aren't very frequent in occurrence, but so is the 2nd gear pop-out. My understanding is that if you buy a 6sp 02+ car with sensible miles (>20k) you are greatly reducing the chance of 2nd gear problem. Most of the affected cars had their transmission replaced before 10K.
