Survey: Who idles? Who cares?

The Porsche manual states that we should be idling our cars for at least a couple of minutes before turning off the engine. I assume that this is to allow the turbos to cool down. I have numerous friends who have twin turbocharged BMW 3 Series who never idle their cars before shut down. Do you idle your turbo before turning it off? Is it unique to Porsche turbos and not other manufacturers for some reason such as design or boost pressure?

Yep 2 minutes. Search, this topic has come up once every few months for the last few years. These are OIL COOLED turbos....and there is no turbo time option for these cars due to the security system's set up.....cheap insurance really. Annoying sometimes for sure.

Good point. I've always done this on other turbo cars, but honestly hadn't seen it posted here either so thanks for the heads up!

1-2 minutes everytime. Cheap insurance and no significant smoke on startup.

With high quality & clean oil in the system it's really not necessary unless the car is driven really hard for extended time period. (highway running, auto-x, etc...)

A certain turbo rebuilder suggested otherwise....so I am going to 2 min as optimal (more gets heat soak....) and at least 1 minute always even if I am being harassed to get out of the car and get a warm meal....

Just my world.

No turbo issues for me. But I hear T2 has his car at over 200k miles on the original units.....wonder what he does.

If I drive the car for any extended period of time I always let it cool down. If I drive it a mile away for a fun grocery getter I rarely get the car warm enough to need a cool down period.

I come of the highway and through some wicked s-turns where I drive the line and wring the car out a bit. Then I get to my neighboorhood and drive through the mansion area....lots of kids so I put along at 20-25 for 5 minutes until I get to my modest neighboorhood. By then the turbos are cooled down.

Mine are water cooled anyway.

As noted in post #2, no, others who know more than I explained to me that to defeat the alarm is a royal pita if even possible...and given the number of cars out there, not economical given this fact.

I am sure that if there was one, the various super modded guys here would have one....so no.

If I have driven hard, I definitely idle for 2+ minutes. But given that I spend the last three to five minutes of most of my drives with with no boost, I feel most of the time it's not necessary.

Doesn't the manual say only after spirited drives it's necessary?

+1...i do this religiously and my car runs like a top. Not a puff of smoke and im at 72k miles.

i have a friend that has smoke just upon start up. I understand that it comes from not letting the turbos cool down, but exactly why does it happen and is there anyway to fix that now?
