Hi Everyone.. I’ve been lurking this forum for a while now! Decided to join last week and now I am stepping up to the plate and making a post.. Hope fully in about a year i will have 10 posts and get to see all the pics!
I’ve always had had my eyes on the 911 but never really looked to deep.
I’ve had several Vettes including a 650 hp SC Z06 . I used to track them all regularly. then my interests turned towards motorcycles so i went through 5 Ducati’s and tracked most of those.
Now I am looking at 996's (Mostly because the prices are so low now) and i want a good looking good horsepower car for regular driving and occasional track duty.
Up to now, i have been looking for an 2003 x-50. My wife’s uncle has one and he would give me a good deal on it ($60K). It has less than 10K on the clock, Tubi exhaust, some sort of CPU upgrade, aero kit, carbon fiber kit, sport seats, six speed and the classic lace wheels. Its fast but i want a bit more bite out of it.
Should I look for an x50, or is it cheaper to achieve 600-650 Hp by piecing together turbo and other goodies from places like speed gallery?

First, Welcome to the 6!!! It's a wonderful place full of knowledge. The x-50's a great starting point. Especially with the light mods that the car already has. Then once you get bored with those, and are ready for a bit more HP, you can send in your K24's for some massaging and get a K24/18G rub down. That'll put you at about 650ish hp depending on tune and other mods. So, yes the x-50's a great place to start. BTW, in my opinion, the Tubi is the best sounding exhaust for the 996TT out there! Find out which ECU upgrade has been done. Speed Gallery's in Los Angeles (unless you're talking about another one that I'm not aware of), there's plenty of tuners much closer to you (Switzer comes to mind), so I'd go with someone nearby that way if you need to get some bugs worked out, you'll be able to use the same tuner that did the work in the first place.
Thanks everyone! So just to be clear. The X50 turbos, which are the same as the GT2 turbos are refered to as K24s!

That's correct. Very good turbos. Versatile without too much Turbo Lag. Good amount of intoxicating power bone stock or with a very mild tune. You can get serious HP out of them if you choose to mod them such as the K24/18G or K24/20G upgrades and that'll be a lot lighter on your wallet than going to other turbos. Now if you want ridiculous power, then you'll need to move to something such as GT3076's or GT35's, but that's a whole different ball of wax and internals should be done at that point as well.

Also I have noticed that not too many porsche guys run electornic boost control. Is there a particular reason. All FI cars have been supercharged so this is kind of a new world for me
Welcome!
First of all welcome! I joined not to long ago for the same reasons as you (was a lurker and looking at getting into a 996tt) I've done a good amount of research on here for purchasing one and talked with my guy at AWE Tuning (who's done all the work on my Audi's) and he mentioned when I started my search to find a x50 as a base and work up from there as I grew into the car. However doing some research over the past couple months I've broadened my options by not just looking at x50's. My ideal 996tt will have the back rear seats removed (which look like a joke anyways), gt3 or Status seats put in with a cage and 4pt harness for PCA DE days. That'll give me a little bit of -lbs so looking at "regular" (or non-x50) 996tts is a viable option from a cost standpoint. Yes, x50's already start with k24's and you can ship them out to a variety of places to have them made into k24/18g's but then again Titan Motorsports has a great deal on brandnew k24/18g's. So in the end I've decided that can't be my only factor because the increase in price for the x50 most of the time does not outweigh the cost of just buying the k24's. I'm looking more at mileage and condition along with what other options/mods are already on the car. There's a lot of discussion on 6speed with what to do about which turbos and configurations to match your wants and desires as well as exterior looks, suspension, and wheels. However all that aside a x50 with those options and under 10k miles sounds like a good deal. It would be sweetened to me because you also know the owner, are already aquainted with the car and know how he's driven it. If anyone sees anything wrong in here please correct me because like I said I'm still a newbie even though I've had hours of research. Once again Welcome to the 6!!
