What is done to this car???

Just tested my buddies newly acquired 02 996TT, using a PerformanceBox (gps and gyro).

His car gave 445 whp on the reading and around 490-495 flywheel hp including the number from the the roll off losses test. Pretty warm day here.

I have used the PerformanceBox at work (OEM car development) several times for many vehicles and it always hits 3-5 flywheel hp within the official OEM specifications so I feel this is a very accurate tool.

I am a driver and I test cars for a living, but I am not a Porsche "after market tuning technician", so I canŽt tell one turbo from the other by just looking at the car on his driveway.

What is done to it to reach these numbers?

Exhaust looks totally stock, hard to say though since most systems look the same. Intake is normal.

His car is flashed, so much I could tell him, boost is consistently 0.9, and each time you get off the gas to shift, the engine gives the familiar whining noise/pressure let out (from turbos spooling pretty good).

WeŽll take it up on a lift in not too long to check it out more, but what to look for to start?

Thaanks

If you stick your fingers into the vents on the rear bumper and reach up towards the intercoolers you can tell if its x50 or not. The x50 intercoolers will have ridges, and the non-x50 will be flat.

Those seem like pretty high numbers for just a flash; Although I don't much much experience with gbox dyno numbers compared to actual dyno readings. I'm interested to find out what he has for those numbers.

Or lift the front bonnet, look on the underside and look for "X50" on the label that lists the options!

No X50. Got the paper from Porsche with the factory options. Haven't checked for intercooler.

Tested the box in another friends's 996 3,4 today, it read 220 whp, but we didn't really have the exact weight, sounds a bit low (?).

That is probably close.

996 3.4's are pretty weak (I owned one and they are proned to
coming apart if tracked regularily).

60-130 in 9,7 (1 shift), stock weight, no passenger. On the accel curve there is a slight slight hesitation just after the boost has maxxed up after a shift, like it builds up and then flattens and then lays steady, exact same behaviour on 3rd and 4th so that is a reflection of the power as the rpms increase.

Tried to run it on 100 octane too, then it ran really awesome all the way to limit (7k rpm).

Just trying to identify what this is, in order to keep or re-flash with something else if this is a bad tune.

Pipes looks pretty dry and "hot", not black and smoky.

Sounds like GIAC's orginal software. Can you confirm if the diverter valves are still stock? Anytime I offer a flash to someone I strongly recommend replacing the stock plastic bosch units with aluminum ones. If they ARE replaced and have EVOMS etched into the top of them theres a strong chance its GIAC's software before they started running their own EVOMSit stuff.

The car has black diverters with "forge" logos. I wonder if the stuff was done separately, or if some vendor here sold a "kit". Intake box looks 100% OEM. The black forge diverters blend in.

What'd be the power figure of that GIAC sw, if that's what it is?

And most of all, would it be healthier for the engine to run a later flash? Power is awesome so should preferably not give lesser though.

bump, anybody know the dyno number from a flash like this - and if this would be a reliable "safe" tune for the engine?

I have the GIAC flash with Forge DVs as packaged from Champion Motorsports. Our local Porsche dealer is also an authorized Champion sales/service dealership. It is a safe and proven combo; my upgrade has been trouble free and satisfactory since install 2 years ago.

This flash was somewhat the 'standard' for years, its a great setup for a fairly stock car and if it is infact what you're running, you will love the extra boost and it should be trouble free. One thing you might consider if you do any track driving is the high-pressure silicone boost hoses as the stock units have a tendency to pop off under extended high pressure runs. They are fairly cheap spirited driving insurance and the clip on the stock units is a pain in the butt to try and get back on when it comes off. If you start to mod more, i.e. headers, exhaust, intake and possibly turbos you should look into another flash but if you stay at that power level for awhile then it should be worry free. Give Dan at Vivid or Alex at Sharkwerks a shout if you are interested in the boost hoses, they seem to have the best prices on them at the moment.

Now go out, enjoy it and drive it like you stole it!
