To me an exotic is rare, has extreme performance and is out of reach of most people, so what was exotic 10 years ago may not be today. The 996 TT has the performance to be an exotic, but is not rare enough and at today's pricing is not out of reach. That being said it still has a combination of superior usability, reliablity and performance that any other exotic. So in my view the Porsche Turbo is the best all around performance street car you can buy.

I would put the GT2 in the exotic catagory, the Turbo S I would not. The only thing rare on the Turbo S is the words "Turbo S" everything else on the car you could get as an option on a Turbo in the 2 prior years. The Turbo S was a parts bin clean out at the end of the model run and a great deal for anyone wanting a high performance Turbo, without paying the mark up charged for the X50 and PCCB brakes.

A Ferrarri 348 certainly was exotic in its day. Today it would not have the performance or the reliability to fit in. But it is still a Ferrari and somewhat rare so it many peoples minds it will always be an exotic.
