Thinking about Michelin Slicks
Thinking about Michelin Slicks
I just got back from running both tracks at New Jersey Motorsports Park this weekend. I ran part of the weekend on Hoosier R6 and part on Yoko A048. This was the first time using the Yoko and can report they are a great tire. Plenty of grip and not much wear to be seen. I was following a full race prepared Supercup car and had no problem keeping up. He would gain ground thru the turns but I would catch back up down the straights. The Supercup was running Michelin slicks and I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with these tires on a GT2. I am looking for any feedback as to sizes, wear, availability and if there are any different compounds. The R6 I am running are 245/40/18 and 335/30/18.
If you go Michelin make sure you get the correct sizes to prevent ABS issues, ie Cup Car's are to tall in the rear. I run Hoosier Radial Slicks in 250/650 18 front and 305/645 18 rear. Still dialing them in and the UTCC will be the 1st major test.

I did some research, since I also wanted to run these on my last set of tires I bought a few weeks ago. It dosen't seem like Michelin slicks due well front vs rear in terms of RPM within 3% per porsche specs. The rpm front to rear is crazy diffrent. OR else I would have gone this route. But if someone knows of some that match please post here. I haven't looked at yokohoma slics but i have heard good things. I would prefer Michelin slicks as the sidewall looks pretty damn nice, and i'm not really into 'show and tell'.

If you are only running DE's I wouldnt waste my time messing with the slicks. there is a 1-2 second time improvement with the slicks but car set up and suspension has to be right and unless you are really looking for that last second in a TT or race may be more trouble than it is worth? I still race on Hoosiers. When the Ferraris change from Hoosiers in the enduro races to the slicks for the sprint races they usually pick up one to two seconds.

I have just gotten some feedback from other people online. To really get the added benefit of running slicks I will have to stiffen up the suspension. (ie toe links, bushings, swaybars). Right now the suspension is stock and feels great for track use albeit for some NY potholes when driving around town. So it looks like the R6's for now until I take the plunge for some suspension goodies. Any suggestions on what would be the right place to start to improve this already great set up?
