annoying whine???

Question for you techies? My 04 TT has developed a whine sound coming from the engine. I only hear it at idle. Do any of you have any idea what this could be?? I am making an appt with service but it will be a few days out....

Thanks,

If it goes away when you depress the clutch, then it is some clutch related valve that tends to be noisy....mine does it too. I don't think it is anything to worry about.

Somebody on the board knew about this and what it was...???

If you do a search, you'll find some discussion about this noise which is heard near/at idle and goes away when pushing the clutch pedal in. I have it, too. I took the car to the dealer and, in a nut shell, they told me it's the Nitrogen Valve in the hydraulic system which operates the clutch assist and the power steering. Evidently, it can sometimes vibrate under pressure and make the noise. The valve is hard to get to (engine out is easiest) and the replacement valve may do the same thing, so it's basically a "live with it thing". If it's any consolation, mine has been doing it much less often, now. I have about 15K miles on the car.

I noticed the same thing, a whine or whistling sound at low RPM that goes away when I depress the clutch coming to a stop. Have service appt on 11/2 - so I will post the solution here..

I have the same FRIGGEN noise in my 04 cab. It seems to whine when I am in 2nd or 3rd gear , off the gas and the rpm's get low.

It goes away as soon as I depress the clutch!

It drives me insane!

I get the exact same thing with mine. Usually it's not too loud but other times it's so loud that I look in the rear view mirror thinking there is a cop coming after me with a siren.

I got it too. Usually happens when I am coming to a stop or slowing down and goes away when I depress the clutch. It is especially noticeable when the top is down.

If someone gets a service appt before I do, please post your findings, it will be good to get a heads up on the cause. I am going to call my dealer tomorrow and get a service appt but, my dealer is usually a week or two backed up so I'll let you know as soon as I find out from my end...

thanks,

Yup. I get the same noise...especially when I am in 2nd gear and I start to really slow down...push the clutch in and it's gone.

And here I thought I was the only one!

The conclusion is that this noise is common/normal. FWIW Dan the SA at Pacific Porsche also told me the honking sound from the DV's was normal. Even though it's common, it shouldn't be this audible. At times the squeel can sound excruciating. Sound doesn't seem to be consistant with my turbo, every time I had taken it in to have the dealer look into it the sound wasn't quite audible.

I posted about this noise last year. Had the tech at Pacific Porsche look into it, although while at the dealereship it didn't seem to make the noise.
