tracquest and the gt3
Three groups in california that have not been mentioned. NCRC www.ncracing.org, Unlimited laps www.unlimitedlaps.com and the lotus club http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GGLCtrackeventsinfo.
Unlimited laps is a DE type organization as is NCRC. NCRC also holds time trials for interested people. Both groups pull from the same instructor pool as tracquest. Both usually provide lunch.
The last unlimited laps event at thunderhill was $215 for 2+ hours of track time. The last NCRC event at TH was $225 for 2+ hours. NCRC allows you to run one group down at any time space permitting. NCRC will be at Sears 11/29 for $275.
The lotus club is a special case. Instruction is usually not available. They usually have about 40-50 cars, 2 run groups, 3+ hours of track time. Typical cost at TH or BW $150-175.

One more thing. If you are looking for groups to run with then look at the track websites and look at their calendars. They will list who is there and when along with contact info. If something looks interesting then contact the group and check out their philosophy.
justin at ncrc runs a tight ship, but not much instruction. but trak time is good. if one needs less instruction, GGLC lotus club is great, you can get about 7 hours of track time if you or your car is up to it ;-) unlimited lap is wonderful too. but don't follow those subies too closely!
The reality is that you are much better off cost wise renting the track with 10-12 friends so that it only costs around $300-350. The guys that are charging $500-650 are making money off of you, with some risk that they can't get enough peolple to cover the cost commitment. However, sometimes it is a lot easier to pay the premium and have instructors around, etc. if you want them. Bottomline, it is all good just being on the track.
