So SunCoast Porsche Dealer (look to the right for their banner) was kind enough to honor the PCA discount and sent me the NEW design KEY which is an easy gut swap from old to new! As this process went on you can really see and feel why they went with a new key design. New weather seal design is much better and and the construction is 100% more solid. Of course its light years more pleasing to own.

Box

Old Key

New Key

Old and New OPENed Up

Remove the Transmitting Crystal

Pull back this Clip

and this one

Pull out the Circuit

Pull the woodriff key out that is sitting on a spring to release the pressure on the key blade it self

Pull and you have one dirty key...

Clean the Key Blade using metal polish and bronze wire brush (bronze so you don't scratch the key blade when cleaning.) LOTS of dirt from the keyblade!

So fresh and clean your Key Blade will be

Don't forget to clean the tract ... do it right!

Plug it into the same spot but on your new Key

New All rubber pad in the new key

Plug things back in

It looks great, can I find one for a CABRIO Key with 3 functions, door, bonnet and hood, for a 996?

I just picked this up from suncoast and did the conversion. It's really easy and makes me feel like the car was made this decade (based on key appearance alone )

I just received this from Suncoast today, I was happy to see it's factory Porsche! Question on the transponder pill., both the new key and my old one's have the tip of copper pill pointing AWAY from the key., however the instructions on Suncoast's site have a "note" that it must point towards the key., so I'm confused as my old keys obviously worked?! I also noticed from this post that the one's shown have the pill towards the key. Which way is correct, or does it not matter?

FYI- the manufacture date on my part is 31.03.2011, I wonder if earlier versions (2009 shown above) had the pill facing the opposite direction???

Update, after testing - the closer the pill (copper part) to the ignition the better!

Thanks sirschwag for letting us know. Also, did you order a part that included the guts and key or just the cover?

I got the design key, as pictured above. It was just the new styled cover, but a nice upgrade. Getting the metal key in was a very tight fit, I had to remove the spring and put back in after I finally got the key in. Also, I ordered from Suncoast and my Porsche emblem was slightly off center, they sent me a new one, which was a bit better, but not perfect. Apparently the batch they have are all like that as they have the same manufacture date. So if that bothers you, I'd buy elsewhere, perhaps sonnen Porsche has a different batch.

This is one of those mods that if you haven't done yet, just get it over with. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal but walking around with this old sh!tty key really annoyed me. This new fob is a major upgrade to the old key from the factory. I did it about 4 years ago (I think), would have paid double honestly.
