I think I toasted my clutch..
I was cruising on the highway, pressed the gas pedal in 5th gear, the RPM went to 7K, but the speed stay the same. After cruising for 5 minutes on the highway, the car just died on me without any CEL. When it was towed to the shop, I can smell the stench of the clutch. I hope it is only a clutch issue. I was able to start the car and drive it, but only did it for a few feet since I don't want to damage anything else.
How do you know when time to change your clutch? I didn't notice any different in the feel of the clutch when I change gear. I heard OEM clutch is about $800. How many hour does it take to do this job. While I am doing my clutch, what else should I need to do so I can take advantage of saving on the labor cost. The car is an 01 with 51K miles on it and it has all OEM parts. The car was in the shop last week to have the left radiator replaced.
Thanks for any advices and thank you for reading,

Does sound like clutch is done. I would put a slightly upgraded Sachs back on so you never have to change again. The cost of the clutch is not as big a deal as the labor (Stealer = 17 hours @ roughly $120/hr) unless you get a high hp much higher cost clutch.
if your not planning on modding beyond 550hp (approx) and like the stock clutch feel, would stock clutch be the best way to go ?

If you think you might go above 600 crank I would recommend a stage 3 clutch.
I just got my car back from the shop on Friday and a new clutch was one of things it was in for. My indy got my Sachs stage 2 for 1700 and labor was 14.5 hrs for clutch and new flywheel install. As mentioned above the labor is a big piece of the equation so spend the extra $$ up front to put in a stronger clutch if you plan to upgrade your power at any point.
If you haven't done plugs it would probably be a good time as well since the car is in the shop, I would think at 51k they have probably been done once and may be almost ready to be changed again.

pedal feel with the sachs seems very comparable to stock, however the sachs disk has much more bite to it. It definitaly is not a heavy feel and does not exhibit the on/off action of some clutches.
without a gt2 slave delete you shouldn't notice any difference on a power assisted clutch, with a gt2 slave delete the upgraded pressure plate would have more pedal resistance then the stock pressure plate.
if i was replacing the clutch i would go atleast to stage 2/3 setup kevlar or fibertuff
Mike knows hes used em before i would not put a stock organic disk back in too easy to smoke em.

Thanks everyone for your reply and IMs! I think I will go with Stage 1 since I will never mod my car above 550 hp - flash and exhaust are the only things I wanted to do to this car. I also like the feel of the stock clutch.

I'm jealous of all you guys and your clutches that don't suck like mine. Stage 4 is killer with the on/off. I ALMOST looking forward to having to replace it with something that can handle 550-600HP and not be as brutal to drive.

Chi, you need to drive my car sometime and feel it...
