Considering relo to CA : implications for my car ?
Folks,
Am considering an attractive offer from a BioPharma company in the bay area.
As far as my TT is concerned, do I need to take anything into consideration for my relo decision ?
The car has some mods (see below), of which the EP stage 1 may be the only potential deal breaker. Would I pass inspections with this set-up ?
Also, are there any special or property taxes on cars ? (I currently pay a 600$ annual property tax in GA).
Guess both gas and insurance will be way more expensive.
If anybody has any news on the bike regulations, feel free to chime in. Would also take my MV Agusta & Ducati.
Arnold is going to be glad to see me coming
Thanks in advance for your advice.

You should have no problem with the stage 1 passing smog tests. I have yet to have any problems. There are many great places to take your car. The costal drives, beautiful mountains, and of course the wine country are an easy day drive for you here. However, everything is more expensive here.

Technically the car will not pass smog. Technically.
Most smog shops don't know P cars, and turbos, and will not know what is stock and what isn't. Depends. See:
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ost-hoses.html
You property tax will be higher, you car will cost a few hundred a year to register, insurance is more, gas sucks (you'll be buying 100 octane at $7.99 a gallon), drivers are morons, roads are crap... what else am I missing?
Come on out!
(We need someone to pay the deficit!)

This is for a San Mateo based job. Visited the area before. Used to race the canyons (Alice's) on my way down from Portland to Laguna Seca.
Being able to enjoy my toys is a big factor for me when deciding on a move. Earlier this year I declined Singapore. One boner a year when Formula 1 hits town just didn't do it for me.
Learned the detremental effect of international moves on my hobbies the hard way when I lived in Vienna (Austria) a couple of assignments ago. Took my Viper there. The neighbors just freaked out when I jacked it up and started working on it in a common underground parking lot. They thought I did not have the financial means to run my car by the stealership. For me, working on a car or bike and subsequently driving the sh*t out of it is a hobby...

This is what Sean meant to say, from his previous experiences.
Having been born in SF and living there for 50 years I have the following observations. Living the in the Bay Area is not the same as living IN San Francisco. In most of the Bay Area you can take your Porsche anywere without much to worry about if you stay aware of the surroundings. In the Peoples Republic of San Francisco, you're a marked man (excluding the Marina and Pacific Hts districts). There is the bicycle coalition to deal which advocates an outright ban on all autos and host a planned city wide rush hour traffic jam on the last friday of each month with the consent and help of the police department. The Mission District Liberation Front advocates the vandalism of all high end european and japanese makes of cars. Keying your car, breaking the windows and tossing dog **** in the front seat are some of their favorite tactics. Due to the aggressive nature of the entrenched homeless population, do not under an circumstances leave anything in plain site in your car. This gives new meaning to the phrase "gone in 60 seconds). In any SF neighborhood an enclosed garage is essential.
Most of the single women are in fact desperate but have given up meeting a
monogamous single hetrosexual man, they are either lesbian, bi, or being taken care of by a sugar daddy. And if you show up on a date in a Porsche, you're going home alone. Try a Prius.
The smog testing in Cali can be very stringent. Basically anything install on the vehicle engine that is non-stock (ie non CARB -California Air Resources Board approved) is cause to fail the smog test even if you pass the test itself. Of course there are many smog shops that over look the "visual" inspection part of the test and are happy to pass you if you pass the sniff test. Talk to them before you take the test as all information is passed via computer to state at the time of the test including visual non-conformance. Once you're identified as a gross pollutor or non CARB modified vehicle, it is hell to fix it.

And I have lived in the mission for the past 5 years.
And just find a sympathetic smog shop... geez, it really ain't that hard.
Yves, welcome to California!
