Hesitation off idle -MAF?

I've searched around a bit on bad/dieing MAF symptoms so thats my 1st culprit, but I'd like to get some veteran opinions.

Car is an 01 6 speed with 36k miles. Coming off of idle in the 1-2k rpm range the car has a bit of a flat spot/hesitiation. Its consistent and goes away above that range (runs like a champ at WOT). Its not violent, but just rough enough to be annoying. No codes on the DME. STFTs in the -3 to -4% range, LTFTs at 0. The MAF seems to respond to throttle inputs and registers ~0.7 lbs/min at idle.

Edit: I have cleaned the MAF thoroughly with the electrical cleaner but no change.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

try unplugging the maf and see if you get the same symptoms (you will get codes, but they can be cleared)...doesn't sound like a maf to me. When was your last service plugs and coils?

Stock Turbos? My car always had a bit of a rough idle and surging at very light throttle with GT28's and GIAC software.

Unplugged the MAF and the issue remains. Last service was at 31k and they show plugs being done though the coils weren't (I didn't own the car at that point). Car is stock. I'm going to pressure check everything and probably go ahead and do fresh plugs and new coils. Hopefully that'll clear it up before I do a flash.

Thanks for the help!

If you are talking about a flat spot in first gear at low rpm's, I think that is normal. There is no boost pressure until 2000-2500rpm's. In all other gears you will be shifting into a higher rpm level so won't experience the flat spot.

I have the same symptoms and from reading on renntech, it seems it is the variocam switching over right at 1500 rpm. I think mine might be a little more like plugs or something but I cannot be certain until i change them this winter.
