Why oil changes are important...
Friend just shot me this and while not 996 related directly it's pretty amazing to see what people will do to their NICE cars out of ignorance... Guy went 60K miles sans oil change and the result is umm wow well I'll let the pics speak for themselves!

Okay, I read the whole thread and the one before it.... Guy was starting a new business that required a ton of traveling around to get off the grouond. At the same time his Father who was suffering from Alzheimer's required a great deal of care - being an only child that fell to him. To top it off this all put a strain on the relationship with his woman so the car fell to the bottom of the list. Here's the kicker - that 60K or so miles (yes 60!) occurred over the course of ONE year.
So, it's not like the guy drove it for years and years sans oil it was just one year and life got in the way. Things have finally calmed down for him and the oil sensor rang the clue phone for him. What's really nice is th emember over there that has taken the guy under his wing and is helping him get it all worked out. I'm going to be VERY interested to see how it looks the next time they pull the valve cover and they're going to pull the sump too thank god. I just hope nothing got too clogged up inside and that this flush crap is working - the oil filter looked like *** the last time it was pulled what with all the chunks in it <shiver> Cross yer fingers it doesn't lock up on the poor guy....

So in reality he isn't a car or a mechanical guy at all.
I don't care what kind of stress life has for you, you take care of the things that take care of you. Unless you don't know or undertand what they/it needs to be taken care of.
I hope it gets better in 2010 for the guy.

Well, he seems to be getting his hands plenty dirty trying to fix this mess and he's had to swap the filter and whatnot a few times. I think he's probably learned a good lesson here and is slowly coming around to the idea of playing more with the car from what I can tell. so far the car is apparently running great but man I'd be worried it's going to suck a chunk of gunk up and lockup tight as a drum. At least they sound like they're going to pull the pan and clean that out right instead of just chucking chemicals into it with crossed fingers! Everyone starts somewhere and while this guy has had some real crap occur it sounds like he's getitng back on track and made some good friends who are helping him along. Believe me - he got blasted pretty good more than once over there
I did once have a car.. a Chevy "Sprint" aka GEO Metro that I abused. It got oiol when the light began coming on at lights. Said oil being the used synthetic I had changed out of another car! 42MPG beating the snot out of it day in and out. Paid $1K for it, sold it for same close to 2 years later. Total maintenance was the used oil, some floor mats and seat covers, some USED tires that I later swapped for new ones, and nothing else. I actually miss that car! I knew exactly what I was doing and it kept right on ticking smoothly - it was a champ.... Next owner used it for at least a year and then I lost track of it :-(

The car has a maintenance interval warning. I can see going a coupe thousand miles, but quadrupling the already super high oil change requirement? Was that guy just too cheap to change oil? If so that gives new meaning to "badge *****". had to drive a BMW, but didn't care to spend money on stupid sh@t like maintenance...
At least the license plate is there for everyone to see. That car should be a salvage. I'm sure this car will be passed on to an unsuspecting person as a third car, woman driver deal... and the issue will never be disclosed.
