Audio Upgrade: how much of the Bose system is compatible with upgrades?

Have done a search and understand 2003 and up are on fibre optics. My car is a 2001. Considering the following options:

a) change the unit only, some kind of single din with USB capabilities
b) a) plus upgrade AMP door/dash speakers, keeping the bose sub and rear speakers as is.

From what I understand, on a 2001 car, changing just the head is no problem.

If the head unit is upgraded, will power come from the new head unit or the OEM amp?

Is it possible to control the front/rear/sub seperately if the new head unit has these capabilities but OEM amp retained?

Does the bose sub have a seperate amp?

TIA
