I've swapped 4 exhausts on my car and getting ready to do another shortly, and I've NEVER removed the rear bumper cover... This is REALLY an unnecessary step... I've done exhausts both with my lift, and from the ground using jack/stands and never had an issue... Seriously... This is a step (or three) you don't need to make.

However, make sure you don't mix up your o2sensors and as the others said, soak those stucks on the turbos...or replace as needed...

I agree, it's certainly not necessary
But it helps you see everything the first time you work on the car
