Skipping line selection for now, you want to maximize a number called combo g or g sum. G-sum equals the square root of ((lat g)^2 + (long g)^2). So, to monitor if the driver is gatting the maximum capability of the car, you need lat and long g's. This is the best starting point for any detailed analysis. To go further would take a long time. If you are really interested, I can point to links of discussions I have had on other boards and name references.

Finally, don't think that it is only for expert drivers finishing touches. It is much more enlightening than the simple long g only analysis you did.

Final caveot, it doesn't apply as well to those that are not very technically oriented.
Tim,

Thanks for the explanation. I indeed am not at a level that would cause me to be so technical. However, that doesn't mean that at some point in the future it won't interest me, so your description is much appreciated.

Maximim those G's baby!!

Okay, now my head is spinning. Are you saying I have to read a graph while I'm driving? Or, is the crew going to be reading me g measurements they download wirelessly real-time while I'm lapping and comparing to previous laps? Or is my DA unit going to show me current and previous measurements while I'm on track to compare? Or, am I going to have a data overlay comparison with the fastest instructor that we analyze after each session to compare lat and long g data..of course, along with throttle and brake position, steering wheel position, rpm, entry and exit speed, and what else...Oh yeah, if the ambient track temperature changes throughout the day, as it inevitably will, the data overlay comparison is no longer accurate....Then, of course, we'd better be sure we're running properly purged tires with nitrogen and monitor the pressures and surface temp variants...Hmm...Have you done data work with a race team before? Seems like you're way over the heads of the average driving enthusiasts, but you have a lot to offer a pro race team for sure. The benefits of data are huge. It's quite a lot to throw at a consumer-level school attendee though.

Super D: You have some knowledge just by all the points you raised. I like it!

I am working on two of the things you point out. I am trying to get a realtime g-sum indicator, similar to a shift light tree. I am not sure how useful it would be but I don't know anyone who has tried it. Secondly, my favorite anaylsis is to get the best driver I can to take my car out and thrash it so I can compare my data under the same conditions.

Super D: Nice try!

So far, Norm Goldrich (former pro ALMS racer etc.) is my target to "school me big time".

Hey, can't blame a guy for trying!

Curious. When and where are you driving w/Norm? Is he working at a school or doing private track stuff? I think he's in the Midwest, yes?

Yes, Norm is out of the Midwest. He races at Putnam for sure and that is where I plan to have him "help me". I do not have a specific date yet but I will as the season approaches.
