Drag racing set up
Drag racing set up
Looking to take a 996tt to the local street drags. I have lots of experience running bikes and domestics but no p car seat time.
Besides the obvious; removing extra weight 1/2 tank of gas etc. What tips can you guys give me so I don't blow it?
Launch rpm etc?
The car is rwd and makes 550hp at the wheels.
Thanks in advance!!

get tire pressure right, probably could setup the rear suspension to give a more flat contact patch, get some axles cause the stock ones will break if thats all your gonna do is 1/4mile and practice. i dont expect your clutch to last too long either.
Myself and others did lots of runs with much more power than that.
Here is a "soft launch" that I did (not a drag race obviously), but it can be done
without decimating your clutch but certainly will shorten its life.
The guys with the really good times have run 17" drag radials (or 18" at least).
My runs were always run on 19" Mich PS2's (which is less than ideal).
Practice, Practice, those launches and shift points !

I launch around 3000-4000 or so and slide it out nice and easy... NO dumping the clutch!!!
I still spun in first and bogged 2nd...

Stock axles,(that's why I am not launching) and a Clutchmasters Stage 3ish clutch. It's actually a Stage 3 clutch with a little more spring pressure for holding power and a LWFW. The LWFW makes it very hard to launch, but very noticeable improvement under acceleration.

I am running 100% VP M1 methanol on an older HFS-1 Aquamist kit. I run the kit off of injector duty cycle. I did the install (even though EPL could have) and Tony did the tuning. Car runs awesome and has been VERY reliable at the 600whp level for quite a while now.
the trick is to set up the car so you wont abuse the drive train, or else you will have to start replacing parts quickly. most tuners now offer the two step anti-lag launch control on the ecu. use anti-lag at around 5000 rpms and just slip the clutch out gradually. it is a very non-eventful launch with good results. here is mine with a 60 ft time of 1.66 seconds.

EPL Offers launch control as part of their tuning package. I think that's your best bet if you're concentrating on drag racing. The system is like having a secondary rev limiter when in first with the clutch depressed... I imagine a pretty low primary limiter say 3,000 RPM is plenty to get the turbos spooling without beating your clutch.
I'm sure Tony knows what a good launch control RPM limit is..

Here is a moderate launch on street tires, awd, GT3 seats. Subwoofer, tool kit, spare tire removed - roll bar, 6 point harness added.
