Anyone do this mod? I assume the fob is a dealer only part?

 

yep - picked up a used fob. Change the board, crystal and key and you're good-to-go.

I've seen it at several, non-sponsor, online sites. You can find them. (I think it's around $100, and a fairly easy DIY swap.)

 

I haven't seen it as cheap as $100 but I've seen them for more. Suncoast sells it for more than that.

 

Suncoast is probably your best bet. Bought my car with them already.

i've just done mine a few days ago. looks much better than the original 996 key cover but the feel of the buttons are slightly different. in terms of looks, it's lightyears ahead of the original.

 

There are actually 2 replacement "heads" with slight differences... The one pictured above the is 911 design one and a little bit cheaper (I got that one, cause I have a 911). The other is the same shape with slightly different colors and it says "GT" where you see "911" - that's the actual Carerra GT one.

Really easy DIY swap...

I finally got this...how to you open the plastic fob without the key head in it. Thats how mine is and I tried wedging a screwdriver in it but I don't want to mess it up.

Any advice?

 

Got it...Pry from the key ring hole and it will pop open.
