Ooohhhh aaahhh should have done on my first day of 996TT ownership!!!

In the photo: My front diff and main shaft (front halfshafts obviously gone as well) out of the car.

996TT AWD. Awesome.
996TT 2WD. PASSION.

Ran up Sunset from PCH, to Mulholland last night, just to get an initial feel. My summary: It's just a completely different world. The car is just really really alive and has developed this companionship-of-GT3-and-the-likes-"personality", character is just tons more ba**s. I loooove it.

(disclaimer the above is a reflection of my spirited feelings after doing this mod to the car and I don't take any sort of responsibility for anything even remotely related to this, that You do to Your car as a consequence of this posting or that it would be safe to drive as 2WD, and I do not recommend anyone to switch off PSM).

I like my AWD but it's good to know that if it ever starts to go bad, it's one part that doesn't have to be replaced.

Depends somewhat on your mods, my car was frankly dangerous after I removed the front diff. After I changed the coil-overs and put on larger R-compound tires, I would never go back. But I have to admit some uncertainty about going back until I got the proper tire and suspension upgrades.

I might be overly cautious (I'm sure I am compared to many) but my thought about going RWD with the 996TT is that I won't do so until I can at least afford to do a tuned/corner balanced coilover installation AND a proper LSD for the car. At that point, I bet the car would be controllable and a ton of fun.

Congratulations on your latest mod! I'm really glad it's something you're enjoying.

Congrats.

My car's been RWD for the better part of 3 years. I'm going to experiment with AWD since the latest Turbo/GIAC Majic/IC/Y-Pipe upgrade. These turbos spool so fast, it's just very easy to get wheelspin even on tip-in.

It's very fun spinning through 1st and 2nd, but it's not fast.

BUT a word of real life experience with that (2WD no LSD): I have a car of 500+ hp and it ran perfectly FINE even without LSD, just a tiny bit "squirmish" at full boost and at a few points the PSM would interfer as traction control. With no diff, I DON'T recommend turning of PSM.

However, by experience I know 2WD and NO LSD would not cut it for track, which is why the LSD is going in.

A note to that good driveability with 2WD and no LSD: I have very well setup coilovers, GT2 camber arms, GT2 wheels with 315 rears, really well balanced set of Eibach anti-swaybars and a right foot trained for more than 14 years in racecars and sportscars.

User "Brad Bedell" has stub axles/tension bolts, I just got a PM from him today (1 day too late for myself to buy his, so I "broke" my own front half-shafts at the CV joint yesterday). But I would have loved to have the tension bolts ready in hand, would have saved at least 1 hour work if not more, makes the swap incredibly fast and simple and 100% reversible. Shoot him a PM.

Man I am seriously considering doing this, although my diff is still working well... I do have the LSD, but who knows... Maybe I'll wait until I have the rest of the "stuff" bolted on and sorted...

Should be 100% reversible no matter what. I bought my car because it was AWD, but have since converted last year and really have no intention of putting it back. Go figure...

Yeah it will be revesible anyway, but the benefit with having a pair of tension bolts ready is the saved 1 hour of shi**y greasy work to split your existing driveshafts, which is actually also not that easy no matter how much work you spend on that little C-clip. The CV sits (at least on mine it did) HARD.

My diff had 24 kmiles on it and worked very well too. It just didn't do anything useful, I'm saving it, if I ever move to Sweden or some other real winter place.

I ran 3.9sec 0-60 btw today with 2WD, NO LSD, NO wheel hop(!!), always had wheel hop with AWD. I logged with PBox. And I wasn't pushing it too hard on launch or shift, just did one 4.0sec run for fun and when I noticed no wheel hop I did one more a little harder, 3.9 sec. A more brutal shift and I'm sure it's a 3.8s but I don't like to abuse my car.
