850-900whp with awd vs rwd??????????

Hi everyone, i am tyring to decide wether to stay awd as opposed converting to rwd. My car is at bbi getting 3.8 build with all the goodies and will be done soon( i will make a new thread once the car is complete to share my experience). My car should make 850-900whp and would like some feedback one how the car handles. Would the front diff be able to handle the power? Any info from the guys with high hp builds would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I dont think your front diff would be able to handle that kind of power based on what I read here.

Powells car spins all 4 tires in 2nd and 3rd gear. I think a large drag radial paired with RWD will ultimatly be the best setup for that much power.

On the street though, it is nice rolling 19's and (sort of) putting down all that power with the awd.

In RWD, unless you have drag radials all the time, you will be all over the place, under power. AWD will be a little better, but not much, unless you have the same drag radials on, all the time.

stay AWD. you have some more loss, but much more stability and more weight where you need it, the front.

With a good LSD, you will have less occasions to send power to the front. It does work well.

I'm probably the only person in this thread that has actual, personal experience with this, so here's my take:

At high boost, I was making 890 rwhp in my car and I was running RWD. I ran Nitto DRs which hooked extremely well on the street. They were also good in the rain, and the sidewalls were stiff enough to handle very well.

My best friend has a 3.8 liter car that makes 914 rwhp at 1.5 BAR. He is also RWD and he runs Nitto NT01s on the street. Again, the car hooks very well.

Neither of us were running LSDs.

If you want to run 19's, you can run Toyo R888s and hook all day long. You have plenty of tire options...and with the right tire, you will hook very well with RWD and without an LSD.

If you only plan on running true street tires, than yes, you will get a bit better traction using AWD than RWD...but also keep in mind that unless you plan on running C16 every signle day, you will not be running 850-900 rwhp the majority of the time...so why the need for AWD?

It's up to you. But there are plenty of us that have/are making power like this, and we hook just fine on ths street with RWD.

Agree with Scott here. You will shave some weight too plus your E.t. and 1/4 mph will be faster too based on experience. I should stop talking now b/c I'm not a AWD fan

996 TT can't spin the front tires. I'm sure it spins the rear tires hard, but all this car can do is transfer some torque to the front.

I think a car with that much power will eventually burn the viscous coupling though.

But listen to these guys ^ they have real world experiencce

On the boost I run on the street I make 900-915+rwhp judging by the fact I ran 26psi on the dyno and run 28+psi (I was gaining 25-30rwhp per PSI at this point) on the street. I run AWD at the moment on 19" rims (315/25/19 Nitto INVOS). I have traction issues sometimes when I brake boost, but I am very lucky to have a standalone setup and a tuner that was able to limit the torque in the midrange so that I do not have as much tire spin. When I go RWD, which I will be for drag racing, I don't plan on having my 19's hook very well, but I also have a CCW Drag Pack with 27" Drag Radials coming for drag racing and traction. It won't help my 60-130 though because a taller tire will keep me out of boost longer.

I do like AWD because of the fact it hooks 90% of the time at my power levels which is about what you are shooting for, maybe even a little more for me. That being said I would suggest RWD if you plan on drag racing because you are going to usually MPH a little higher. But if you are just looking for fun on the street I'd suggest AWD if you are going to run a 19" rim for good looks. If you want to run a 18" rim and a drag radial that you can't really get caught out in the rain in then you will be fine on drag radials.

Explain why we saw all 4 tires have white smoke coming off of them on a 29psi spike pass, and the car track WHERVER it wanted to go no matter how I corrected it. Remember 29psi spike for me would put me in the 900+rwhp area and about 850-870AWHP level.
