Question Split Rim Refurbishment.....Perimeter Bolts

My three piece split rims are starting to look a little tired and old and could do with a refurb. Whilst I have an idea of what I would like to do with the wheels themselves I'm still unsure of what to do about the perimeter bolts

The bolt heads are corroded, so I need to either clean and plate them, or simply replace them

The wheels are TechArt Daytonas by Speedline
The perimeter bolts aren't your usual Torx or Allen head fitment They have a strange 'button' type head to them

As the wheels are relatively rare I would like to keep the original style of bolts if possible

Assuming I can remove the bolts without snapping them do any of you have any suggestions regarding plating options and their durability?

I have emailed Speedline to see if they still make them just incase I do snap some, but I'm pretty sure they'll have stopped supplying them by now

If I can't get the bolts from Speedline does anyone know where else I might be able to get this style of bolt from?

I will pm you a source where you can order many kinds of bolts that are specially made for split rims. I just need to get my other computer.

Not to open a can of worms, but maybe contact the manufacturer and find out if and what they recommend. Obviously they probably have torque values and a specific way to tighten them to avoid mis-shaping the wheels...etc...

Yeah, I've sent an email to Speedline, just waiting for a reply

I've already refurbed BBS Split rims without any issues what so ever. It's by no means a hard job to do, it's just time consuming

As long as they're torqued correctly and are sealed properly you're good to go

Did you ever get your wheels sorted in the end?

Good. Maybe you can post what TQ specs they recommend?

As far as my wheels, nah, left them as is and have been running them as you see...I'll keep an eye out for another set if I keep my car...

Might be worth giving Mike the polisher a shout he should be able to sort something for you.

Cheers Neil

I was actually contemplating using Mike, I'm not sure where he's located though
Any ideas?

I first saw his website last year and was very impressed
Have you had any dealings with him?

I've heard a few good things about The Wheel Specialist too
They're in Birmingham and I'm in Kenilworth

Have you had to have anything done to your BBS rims, or are they holding up well?

Mike is based in Glasgow. He did the LM's on my car just before i bought it and i have spoke to him since as im planning on getting them redone to change the center colour.
He is now doing a clear powdercoat that takes to the polished lips to save having to keep polishing them which is the only thing i hate about my wheels.

Good to hear you're happy with him

What did he do to yours previously?

I'm currently thinking of doing the inner rims gloss black, the centres bright silver, and the outers clear finished after polishing the life out of them

What colour are you doing your centres?
Every so often I think about doing the centres orange or green

Feel free to PM me with the costs if you know them

He stripped the rims , polished the lips, powder coated the inners and center silver then rebuilt them.
Im sure when i phoned for a strip, polish and powdercoat it was around £120 per wheel.

Im not 100% sure what im going to do with mine yet ,center either body colour or black.

£120ea sounds good for the whole job

I was thinking of stripping and rebuilding them myself, and just paying for the polish and coating

I reckon I'd go for high-powered silver of body colour if I were you

Let me know what info you want and I'll see what I can do
