Does PSM retard the DME?
Does PSM retard the DME?
(The following is a purely fictional tale for entertainment purposes only
).
I went for a 250 mile "spirited" loop today on some of my favorite 2 lane twisty roads. Good combination of slower twisties and some good wide open 2+ mile straits, no traffic. (I typically sport ride these same roads on my bikes.)
I took the first half of the loop with the PSM on. Temps about 45 and some light misting rain, although very sporadic.
Car seemed to be handling well in the first part of the loop. I did not push too hard because of the roads being slightly damp. However, on the open straights, where I would really wick it up and push to max boost, the car seemed out of sorts. Couldn't put my finger on it, but it was not quite performing up to speed.
Then as I turned the corner for the second half of the loop, I hit one of my favorite roads that has some loooong straights and long sweeping turns. Turned off the PSM half way through and, suddenly, it was like I was driving a different car! Much smoother acceleration, more power, just seemed to want that redline.
Now, I was no where near the handling limits. This was purely a feeling of better acceleration and I even saw the boost peaking at .8 vs .7. Held the boost longer too.
My question is, does the PSM typically dumb down the performance of the engine when engaged and remove those limits when turned off?
I was prepared to get a flash here pretty soon, but after driving it today with the PSM off, I'm wondering if I really need it.
This car rocks!

Psm works when u don't even know it.
Even with it off it's still there I passive mode. As soon as you touch the brake it's Croce again.

Thanks all for your feedback.
Markski, I'm curious about your comment. I understand the ABS still works when PSM is off, but would the PSM really still retard the timing/boost or apply the brakes to slow wheel spin when it's switched off? That's a little too "big brother" like for me. I'd rather know I am totally in control, versus letting some computer decide for me when to back off.
Thanks all for your feedback.
