Need help guys. my '04 996tt will turn on but won't start. When I put the key on, it'll hesitate before all the dash lights come on, then when I turn it over, the dash lights go off (not all lights, just the dash), then it says "key not removed from ignition", but the car isn't turned off.

Ignition relay?

Ignition switch I'd guess. I'd slap a set of jumpers on it just in case but I dooubt that will change anything. I'm betting the switch the key goes into has an issue.

Jumpers don't do anything. There's only 1 battery, right? I had this problem in my MB and it was the starter battery, accessory battery was fine.

It is most likely your battery. If these cars are not driven regularly and if you don't put it into sleep mode or have on a maintainer the battery will die and die faster than you might think.

The car was in storage. I did put it on a trickle charger but it did sit for a few months and drain the battery down before I got it on there. So you think the first thing I should do is throw in a new battery?

You said "Jumpers don't do anything..." that tells me you already tried to jump start it and nothing different occured right? And even if the battery was dorked why would it say the key hadn't been removed when it had? There's a small switch in the ignition lock that senses the key, how would this be fooled by low voltage?

If you already tried to jump it that's no different than swapping the battery.... think this through guys!

It is doing all sorts of crazy stuff, PSM fault (and the light is staying lit on the switch), key left in ignition while I'm trying to start it, raised the wing and it won't go down, won't crank, and the dash lights (all the warning lights) take 20-30 seconds to light up when I first turn it on.

I also should mention it did do this a couple times last summer. It wouldn't start, crank, test of the warning lights wouldn't happen right away but once they finally lit up (again, sitting there for 20-30 seconds) it started right up.

But this time it doesn't matter how long I sit there; it's not going anywhere.

So this is an ongoing thing and it's effecting way more than starting? Check the batt cables, if they're dirty you won't get enough amperage to crank the motor over and if it's REAL bad the computer and everything else sees low voltage due to the resistance. Can I assume you're trying to jump from the rear hatch and not up front at the battery? Could be a bad ground too. Something's sure not right and it sounds like it MIGHT be worse than the ignition switch...

Anything else you've not told us?

Nope, that's about it.

Yes, I jumped from the rear.
