Pagid Brake Pads / Rotor Clearance Issues
Pagid Brake Pads / Rotor Clearance Issues
I finally got around to putting new (OEM) rotors on my '03 TT, and based on board recommendations and some limited DE / track time, elected to go with Pagid RS29 yellows on the front and Pagid RS14 blacks on the rear.
I'm having pad / rotor clearance issues with the new parts. I have the pistons retracted all the way in the calipers. I cleaned and re-used the OEM backing plates (vibration dampers). I can get the assembled calipers over the rotors and bolted in place, but the fit is very tight. The fronts seem to be a little worse than the rears. By tight, I mean you can rotate the wheels by hand, but it takes a lot of force to do so.
It may be a stupid question, but are you supposed to use the OEM backing plates with after market (Pagid) pads? I know if I remove them, it will give me sufficient clearance, but by using them I was hoping to help minimize brake squeal.
Anyone else had similar experiences with this clearance issue, and if so, what'd you do to resolve it?
Thanks in advance for any help offered,
Bill

You are going to have some squeal with the Pagids because that is the nature of the beast. However, I have learned how to modulate the brake pedal to minimize it. Take the backing plates out as they are of no use with the race pads. You may also want to remove the pad sensors and tie them back out of the way since you should be regularly checking pads if you are tracking the car.
