Windshield replace help
I am going to replace my windshield. No cracks or major rock chips but a ton of small pits that looks terrible when the sun is shining through and nevers looks clean.
When I Googled to get prices Safelite came up and they are the most reasonable. They use their own glass which is supposed to be spec.
Has anyone used them and is it a good idea not to go OEM. Porsche gets $700 just for the glass.
Any feed back appreciated.

I wouldn't put safelite in my car. I'd either do OEM or Pilkington (assuming they make one for Porsche). PPG is supposed to be good, but I had one that didn't fit well in an Audi a number of years ago.
I will refuse to let Safelite work on ANY of my cars.
They do not follow factory procedures nor do they use factory trim, dams, spacers, etc.
They hack out the old glass, then glue in a new glass. Position a trim seal around the edge and make it look good.
On some cars the seating of the glass in the frame can cause increased wind noise- the MFG has specific procedures for setting this depth- they are absolutely clueless.
As to OE versus OEM versus Pilkington: UNDERSTAND your terminology. If you ask for OEM you will get Pilkington since they purportedly make the glass for many manufacturers... The are the OEM.
If you want porsche glass ask for OE.
There are no "specs" for the glass- it either meets fedreral standards or not, but there isn't a spec on tint, fit, etc.

Make sure you are there when they replace the glass. Alot of times when they pull out the old glass they can chip the paint. But when they put the trim back on it hides this. You will only know when you see rust coming up from under the trim and it is to late.
Well I am appropriately scared ----less now to have anyone touch it for fear that it will fly off as I'm driving down the h'way and land on my house. Just kidding. I called my dealer, as I was getting cold feet about no having factory glass, and they have an outside service rep that has been installing factory glass there for over 20 yrs. All new seals, spacers etc.... Glass is $700, double what it cost to do a BMW last year, plus approx $300 for labor and parts. Almost as much as an EPL flash. This is the way I'll go.
Thanks for all the info that is why I like being a part of this forum.

Just to echo what an earlier poster said. On a UK board a guy reported problems with wind noise after having a replacement windsceen. Thought it was down to the seals but it was the positioning of the screen that was causing it. It needs to be in the right place to the millimetre!
Thought I'd chime is as I was on the phone with a local windshield replacement shop regarding my other car and asked about this.
Cost to replace the 911TT windshield with internal antenna and auto mirror was $1000. $700 for the windshield and $300 for labor and other. He was trying to locate a cheaper alternative but said these are difficult to find.

They have an online 996TT catalog and the windshield shows a price of $425. I need to wait till tomorrow to call them but they have a slew of parts that are all listed online with pictures and prices... very nice.

Part number... 996.541.901.02 (-01) Make an offer:
Windscreen tinted In stock

Questions I need to ask them:
- integrated antenna
- shipping
- in stock
Also was wondering if mine is the 'tinted' one or the 'windscreen tinted upper part:dark green"
There are different part numbers for these.
