there is a thread on here "who's your tuner" that is a good place to start looking at how many different tuners there is. Then you can research each and make your decision. Asking a question like this is only going to get you 20 different opinions. I have UMW Kevin and I love it. TTboost has tony at EPL and he loves it, soso has Evoms and he loves it, Protomotive, Switzer, Vivid/softronic, Awe, Markski at 911 tuning, etc. And many more. I think for a basic tune you cannot go wrong with any of them.
Whatever the case, they are most likely going to tell you to upgrade DV, and exhaust at a minimum along with tune. If you barely have enough for a tune, then I recommend you go with exhaust and DV's first. you need that in order to make a good tune effective. There are some really great exhausts being sold on here by vendors.
there are many people on this board within a few hundred miles of you that you can always check out cars. There are track days etc, people go to, you can go there, etc.

RH-
Probably the best way to make this decision is to start with a budget: How much money do you want to spend? From there, work your way into a tune. As all have said, with any quality tune, you will need an exhaust and diverter valves to get your money's worth from the tune. If you are leaving your turbos stock, that will help your decision making process as well.
Good luck with it!
Tom.

as someone already mentioned - definetly keep in mind the future upgrade capabilites the company offers and the support they offer. for example i have FVD and they only go up to the K24 turbos and if i want to go beyond that to say 18G wheels, i would need to switch tuners. where if my car had say EPL for example, i would have needed to just pay the "upgrade" cost to go to new software.
also do not make price the deciding factor of a tune. because the bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

I'm new to these cars. Is it really safe to do an exhaust without a tune. On past cars, this was a no no. I would assume that you would want to tune it for each modification added, or is this ECU capable of accommodating more parameters outside stock?

I have an 04 X50. I just did a tune with Kevin @ UMW.
We did the exhaust (Stef at Europipe GEN2 Quiet) - this plus the Waste Gate actuator kit, plus UMW tune dropped the spool time by about 75%. This is great for K24 drivers (your turbos). We also replaced the diverter valves with a Bosch product (less expensive than billet and you don't have to clean them every year.) I picked up close to 100 HP.
More so, the tune delivers torque like you cannot believe. It pulls hard in every gear including 6th, which before the tune was just a silly gear. Now, it's a hard charging monster, all the way through the stack.
Major props for Stef at EP and Kevin at UMW. BTW - Stef's exhaust has broken in and now sounds great from a roar at WOT to a beautiful off-throttle rumble coming down from 3k ... love that gurgle ...

Who will be doing your local troubleshooting???
If you tell Dawes "I want XYZ" and there are issues, and Dawes works with ABC or DEF, you run a risk of hearing them say "Well, we don't really like XYZ because of issues like this- you shouda gone with ABC"
Somebody has to be the "owner" of your personal mod path- you, dawes... somebody. Factor that into your decision process.

PS I did what super did, but two years ago- and the EP2 Loud. Very happy.
