Front diff is leaking...
Front diff is leaking...
....badly.
My car was being aligned today, and I noticed some "dirt" under the front plastic cover which covers the front diff....Holy $hit! The diff is leaking through the lateral seals and trough the rear seal. It is very wet...
Now the problem is that I've been told by the Porsche mechanic that Porsche doesn't sell the seals...and my only possibility is to buy the entire differential....for the modestprice of about 1500 euros (2000+ dollars)...+ labor (at 100€/hour rate...insane)
I don't even know if it is still enough oil in there...I've been driving the car for about 1700miles since the last time I watched under her (when I bought her, actually), so I don't know how much oil has been lost....
Can anyone tell me if I have any chance to find the seals? So I will have the job done by an indy.
Otherwise I'm forced to go RWD, an maybe spend that money on a LSD.
PS: I think that this was my fault, because this year I drove the car for only 1700 miles..I know seals don't like to be dry....

I had a leaking front diff....
the dealership changed the input shaft seal under warranty, but about 6 months later it started to leak again so they changed the whole diff.
I guess this means you can at least get the input shaft seal.

I have a pair of output shaft seals if you need them. Send me a PM. I had an entire front diff out of a GT2 conversion just last month but passed it along to another member in the same boat.

I think it isn't the 1700 miles but if you did it all in 3 months and the car sat for 2 months or more. 2k for a diff is good. I'd say go with it.
All the seals are available for the front diff.
The output shaft seals are part number 999.113.454.40 and the size is 40x60x9. They are about 30 bucks each.
If your dealer needs help with PET, it is illustration 305-15

Ouch...sorry guys I was wrong on the cost of the diff....I just got the dealer's estimate in my hands now, and I was donw 1K on the price above...
It would be 2500Euros (3400usd) + taxes, but for diff+labor.

I really don't know why they said it's not possible to have only the seals...
There are plenty of guys on this forum that switch to RWD, I had the same situation & bought a new diff off of another member on here for less than $1000 & it only had 2k miles on it. I would just look for a replacement.
Here are the part numbers for the seals that you are looking for. Porsche was misleading you when they said they are not available.
Axle seals, 99911345440 x2 $27.31 retail
Rear seal, 99970745540 $16.77 retail.
I hope that this is helpful, let me know if you need anything else.

Thank you all guys, I appreciate the help very much.
I'll get my car to the shop this week or the next (they're busy now), and I think I'm going to remove the front diff + axles + drive shaft, but I will replace the seals anyway (thank you for the Part#), and store the FWD components in case I will not like the car on RWD...
I'm not going to the "official Porsche dealer"....I didn't like the way they "cheated"..
I'll get the car to a very reputable "Porsche indy" instead.
Thanks again!!

seal replacement
Hi guys,
I just came across this tread about the front diff. I have a Carrera 4 (2003) and my right output shaft /joint flange seal is leaking. I am planning to change the shaft seal without disconnecting the front diff. I have removed a front diff before out of a 996 but never actually took one apart. How do you remove the output shaft flange in order to remove the seal? Is there a bolt holding it in place?
My plan is to loosen the front right wishbone, loosen the nuts holding the drive shaft, partially removing the drive shaft (on the diff-side), remove the output/joint flange(how), replace the seal and the rebuilt everything and fill the diff again with diff oil
. Am I missing something?
Thanks for your help!!!!
Regards
Hubert
