Porsche replaced engine
Well...not for me. I think the new crate engine is the same as the original (in your case, better). The engines get pulled a lot, if they were just putting in pistons/rings and a new oil pump, I would go with your assumption. The fact that they are replacing the entire motor...Awesome.
it should be fine providing porsche is replacing it.. depending on your mileage you may consider a clutch job while its out since the labor wouldnt be a factor $$ wise....
Also ask if they will honor 50/4year warranty on the motor... all they can do is say no...

The same thing just happend to me. My tech at the dealership didn't like the sound of the Intermediates when he heard the car a couple of months a go. I had just bought it used from a 1-owner in St Louis. When I took possession of it I questioned the loudness of the noise. He said it had been that way from day one and the dealership in St Louis said it was perfectly normal. I bought it anyway. When I got back home I took it to the dealership. I had called my tech before this and he said he was sure it was the Intermediate gears and that they all do it but to bring it in when I got back and he'd listen to it.
When I pulled up to the bay he walked out with a perplexed look on his face. He then said, "Yea, that's the Intermediate gears alright but I've never in 30 years ever heard them sound like that!" The damn thing did sound like a deisel. At that point he said I'm going to call PCNA and see about getting you a new engine. Of course I was shocked. Anyway, 4-days later here came a brand new 2004 X50 engine in the crate. I watched him put the whole thing in, shot some of it on video, it's quite the job.
I also checked my clutch out and it was in exceelent condition, no need to replace. The guy I bought it from had taken very good care of it and he truly had no idea there was anyhting wrong. My tech said indeed it had been that way from day one. Boy the new one sounds completely different, very quiet.
Breaking it in does kinda suck for sure, especially if you do it right and by the book. As for hurting the resale I don't think it will a bit especially if the dealer is doing the work. I mean man it's a brand new engine, what a great deal. Just make sure the service records indicate everything and I think you'll be in great shape. I mean it's nothing you did. As for the Intermediates, in 2001 there were several TSBs issued on bad gears coming out of the factory, they know what the deal is. However, mine was an '02 and it really shouldn't have happened. Also, the car flunked the "Cam tolerence/adjustment" diagnostics test. the test shows how much the engine needs to compensate for friction. Normal results should read "0", +"1", maybe "-1" at the most. Mine read +199%. St Louis should have never let that car out as "normal"...
The way I look at it I basically have a brand new car. The rest of the car is in pristine shape.

Welcome to the Forum, I am kinda new too.
I wish my experience was that easy. Porsche does not want to do it and we have been "documenting" the problem since I got the car in May.
The service manager said he just got me approved for the replacement and now we will see how long it is gonna take.

It wont decrease the value of the car, Just keep the paper work hand that the engine was replaced, Considering that some of these cars have issues a smart buyer would probably more comfortable knowing that the engine was updated and replaced

Hello guys, regarding moter(engine) replacing i would like to tell you my SAD and UNFAIR experience...
I bought the TT x50 2002 model and at around 16000 miles i was listening the same noise as our previous friend, Ted .... It sounded as a diesel motor....
When i approach the Porsche in Athens, Greece (sole rep in Greece) and inquire for the problem, they initially offered me to replace the moter absolutely FREE with a new one, as i was under guarantee.... Same happened to three other owners ....
Nevertheless in my sourprise, before they started the whole process, they advised me, that Porsche AG (and not themselves) offered to repair the engine that existed and not to replace it with a new one....!!! Of course initially i didn't accept it .Then they propose me to bring in a new one but i had to pay 5500 USD !!!!!
Needless to say that it was my whorst experience i enounter with Porsche as this was my third one (i owned previously 2 Carrera 4s) ..... Anyway, i payed for the replacement of the engine even if my guarantee was still in full force.... I know what you will say....WHY...??? Well you know how drivers addicted to Porsche are without a car...!!!
I hope it will not happened to you that same experience i encountered, even if i'm aware that Porsche USA is not dealing with their customers in that way....
By theway... Are you interested to know the cost of my Porsche in Greece ...???? 295000 USD....!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (A lot of Taxes included..)

Neil...I've had four new engines between two Pcars, no worries with regard to value. And my experience has been exceptional. Once they place the order, providing there is one somewhere in the states, it's very quick. A couple days to get the engine, a couple days for install and testing and you are back on the road. My dealership placed the order, rec'd the engine, installed it, tested it and I was back on the road in four days. The only reason for a delay would be if they have to wait for one from Germany. Best of luck, but don't worry...I'm sure it will all work out to your advantage.

porsche replaced the motor and tranny of my 996... when i traded it in the odometer had 30,000 miles while th emotor had about 7,000.00 and the tranny had about 2,000.00

The current issue of Porsche &911 World has an interesting article on this very issue. It makes the point that over time the practice of replacing engines, transmissions and so on instead of repairing them will have considerable and negative impact on residual values. In fact, they are of the view that it's already happening, just look at the degree of depreciation that is impacting virtually all 996's, especially turbos and GT2's. In fact, they point out that many repair parts that Porsche historically supplied to repair engines, transmissions and the like are simply not available from Porsche. Official Porsche practice now mandates replacement of the engine and so on. In the future, such replacements will simply not be economical and, as such, secondary market purchasers of our cars will find repairs too costly and will bid prices down and dramatically so. Porsches historically have been viewed as long-term and long-lived cars that could be servicable over long periods of time. That has helped maintain their economic value.

Look at Robyn's post above, multiple engines in two cars. That can not help resale. In fact it scares me about the choice I maid buying this car. I wanted to keep the car for a long time, but that was assuming I did not have to spend large amounts of $ on repairs when I am out of warranty. So what do you do? sell it when the warranty is done and be locked into buying a new car every four years?That isn't right.
