Discouraged about 996tt purchase after browsing here
I honestly don't thin they are all un-reliable. I just think many don't age as good as others. Most of the A series are pretty good cars and reliable. The S and RS series are hit and miss. I was gonna get an RS6 until I found out about the DRC issues and that you have to remove the engine to replace some of the O2 sensors. The timing belt job on that car is $2000. I like Audi's. Just remember that the two best days of Audi ownership is the day you buy one, and the day you sell one.

I'm gonna buy an RS6 anyway. Not that bad to work on, once you do it a few times, and when the DRC finally goes (and it will), just remove EVERYTHING related and stick some coilovers on!!!
I wanted to say thank you to everybody for your input. I think I now understand that this car, just like any other 10-year old car, is going to have issues. As a former Supra, Evo, 335i, A4 1.8QT, FD RX-7 owner, I am used to expensive problems...but it sounds like the 996tt won't be too much more difficult than those. I'm going to continue my journey to educate myself on this platform and will start my (months-long, I'm sure) hunt for a 996tt.
For what it's worth, I doubt I'd do much more to the car than a tune - I'd like to keep it as reliable as possible.

I'm only three months into ownership, but every time I drive it
I spent 6 months looking, ultimately found a one-owner CPO model in excellent condition. I paid a little more than I originally budgeted, but no issues so far.
Its not a DD, I have a Honda for that.
Again nothing left to do in the 996 but
Find a good example, get a PPI, and go for it, you only live once.

+1. I'm keeping mine forever
For this performance level, you can't find a stronger/more reliable car out there than a turbocharged Porsche.
The GT1-derived engine is bulletproof.
The overall build quality of the car is amazing. You can't find another car that feels so tight and strong after 10 years...
And if it will require a little extra maintenance...who cares, it deserves it.
IMO.

Frankly, if I were in your shoes I would consider talking to an attorney.
Well I'm going to throw a curve ball into this Porsche is so great thread.
I bought an '01tt on Monday 4/19. Only 17,000 miles and about $30k worth of extras, which were mostly cosmetic except for a tune and exhaust. I paid a little more for the low mileage and mods but thought I got a fair deal. I had a DME scan done, PPI by a Porsche dealership and I test-drove the car.
The owner swore up and down it didn’t have the 2nd gear pop out issue. I made a point to the mechanic to be thorough when test driving the car because I was worried about this. The PPI came back clean.
Monday it popped out of gear twice. Tuesday I started it up and there was a pool of pentsion fluid under the car. It was in the shop tue and wed getting a the accumulator and slave fixed. I got it back yesterday and it popped out of gear again.
Before this I owned a '06 viper for 3 years and never had an issue with it.
I expected there to me maintenance with this car being that it is 9 years old but I was hoping it would make it more then a week. Now I'm looking into getting the 2nd gear pop out issue taken care of its very expensive. So right now, as you can imagine I'm not a big fan of Porsche. My point is that you can do everything right and still buy a **** car. If you don’t have the money to fix the issues then don’t buy a 9 year old car.
That being said the 20 miles I put on the car were pretty fun

Rush05 i feel sorry for you because to fix a Porsche is expensive.I bought a 2002 tt SALVAGE in an auction in "COPART".It had a hit on both side near the back tires.I changed suspension on right side only, bought a rebuilt transmition because the housing had a small crack and did the cosmetic on the bumps.
The car, nock on wood,is the best car i ever had even i got to buy an M3 E46 brand new from the agency( i sold the M3 to get money to buy the 996tt) and the Porsche doesn't bother at all and i give her bad times. We do many street racing, which is not wise, but is the way we do here in my town. The car is so nit and i am the happiest man on earth with that car, thats why i feel sorry when a Porsche comes with problems, besides it's expensive to fix.
Good luck on yor car.
