Help...dead battery

Hey, for the first time ever, my battery is dead on my 996TT.

It's been sitting for weeks, and before parking, I washing and listening to radio.
Well, it has enough juice to turn on interior lights, etc. It just can't turn it over enough to start.

I've heard and read that using cables can be bad on an elec system even when used properly.
What is the best way to charge it back again or start it?
Does Sears have a charger? Something that goes through the cig lighter maybe?

2nd part... How do I know if I need a new battery after it's started? (I'm guessing I can figure it out, but looking for rule of thumb)

3rd and last part...
What's the best replacement battery if I need one? I was told a gel battery if you track your car at all. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I'm not aware of any cautions on jump & charge.......RTFM?

Seriously........I've done both (correctly & with care)......check your bat water level always before you charge.
It either holds the charge or it doesn't.........if it's not that old & not completely down, I'd think it would take the charge.

Lots of threads here & on Renn for bats (tis the season).....looks like alot of people have gone to Optima (with minor mount mod so I understand).

Yeah, what I had heard was that upon disconnecting, even when done as the manual says, a jolt can go to the elec. system similar to a power surge that can cause problems.

I read this in a mag and saw on Speed Channel on one of their tech shows.

Regardless, I'll just jump it.

Thanks.

ebaker is infamous around these parts
There is a positive terminal to hook the jumpers or a charger to in the engine compartment. It's beside the oil filter cap. I'd buy a charger, you'll probably need it again someday. If you want to be super safe you can charge the battery with the key off, then remove the charger before starting it.
