k24 18g boost vs rpm

just got car back with k24 18gs installed. but it's pi$$ing cats and dogs and thought it be wise to wait unitl it's dry out to test things out. Gonna have to wait a couple days for weather to subside but have this nagging curiosity... hoping you guys can put my concerns to rest.

got the car to about 5k in 1-3rd gears and boost hits 0.5bar or so, which seems a lot lower than stock and not sure everything's working properly. did the boost leak test already. Generally speaking what rpm does this turbo hit max boost?

Should be hitting 1.2-1.3bar full boost, no EBC. mods are in my signature. TIA!

Was this WOT? If it was, boost should be much higher by 5K in third, imo.

yea that's what i thought. only did WOT in 1st and 2nd shifting at 5k+ rpm, in 3rd, gradual throttle 50-75% up to 5k. Just know the car was way faster than this prior...

at 3-4k hitting 1-2bar 50% throttle.

no DTCs on brockway obd2 scanner.

For the boostleak test, regulated a constant 1.4bar into an airplug at the MAF location. listened for leaks and sprayed soapy water on all connection points.

thanks

I have an EBC, but similar mods to yours, and I am see 1 bar WOT in first and second and by third I am seeing max boost (1.25 for me) on my K24/18g's.

Sounds to me like you need to adjust your wastegates.

Something isn't right there. You should be seeing a lot more boost than that.

I am no expert by any means - all disclaimers in place - I don't think revs have much to do with boost unless you're looking at engine load.

For example, you can sit in N in your driveway, blip the throttle and no boost occurs because the engine isn't under any load. Equally, I can be at the track with high revs, but still, no boost because I didn't load the engine, i just gradually got there, and the wheels are spinning with the tranny spinning, the motor spinning 4-5k, but with no load - no boost.

For my car, with X50 K24s, and a UMW tune (plus other goodies), my max load/boost occurs at WOT, under hard acceleration around 4200 RPMs - that get's me a peak boost of 1.3 bar, then it falls to 1.2 ...down to 1.0

I figured this out with help from Kevin at UMW looking at my Durametric logs.

Hope it helps ... perhaps you were going easy because of the rain?

thanks for the comments guys.

dryish this morning. WOT 1-3rd gear to 6k rpm, 0.4bar steady max.
here's a vid, sorry for poor quality.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAQnXx0AGG0

narrowed issues down to following:

diverter(s) blown
one of guys at shop didnt know what he was doing and did a few unregulated bursts of 6bar during the boost leak before i stopped him. regulated 1.4bar pressure into MAF position, used soapy water and listened for leaks. pressure held and no leaks detected. learned on here, pressurizing at MAF location puts pressure on diverters on both sides so would this mean chances of damage to diverter are low?

Wastegate

0.4bar steady, peak 0.5 ... may be it's the wastegates. Will try to adjust them to 1.3bar and see what happens.

thanks...

I vote for watsegate adjustment or maybe limp mode. If the wastegate actuator rod is loose or disconnected, you may be running on one turbo (wastegate open all the time)...

That car is barely building boost.

hope it's the wastegates also... have the 1bar wastegates.

if in limp mode, are there any dash warning indicators, DTCs on brockway? thanks

May be Wastegate. But do not adjust to 1.3barr. Use handheld pump to test if it is really 1.0 barr both. If yes, look problem somewhere else.

What do you use to control boost? Should not vary much. Another possible: is the compressor/intake pipe running out of air at high rpm? Should get advice from Kevin.

I've had two instances 1 broken wastegate arm and 1 time when the retaining clip came off. Net effect is wastegate is wide open bypassing the turbo. Boost is slow to build just like in the video. Hope that helps...

This seems pretty typical of the new turbo adjustments, etc... don't despair. Your car should just explode once you figure it out.

Don't know about limp mode and if there are any codes...

It's not the wgs. Did you mess with them?
Where did you get the 18g upgrade? Who put on the 1 bar springs? Did you yet on the bench at what psi did they start cracking open? Should Be around 12 to 13 psi.
If Someone pressure tested the car to 6 bar that alone creates issues.
With all that said. Make sure u file doesn't shut down the tb at 1.3 bar.
Good luck

i forget the exact turbo builder's name but supposed to be a reputable one. bought the kit from vivid. 1bar WGs came installed on the turbos. I didn't touch them cos thought they'd be set.

boost leak test done after that 6bar hickup which didn't uncover any leaks. haven't bench tested it, will do so tonight and start at 12/13psi to begin.

thanks
